Peacefully at her home in Belleville, in her 75th year. Daughter of the late Reverend Carew HALLOWELL and the late Francis Mary HALLOWELL (née BROWNLEE.) Survived by her husband, Dr. Kenneth DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS her three children, Cynthia TAILOR/TAYLOR, David HORNE (Adriana,) and Robert HORNE (Michelle;) five grandchildren, Emily, Alexandra, Melissa, Kayla, and James; sister Mary McLARTY (Tom) of London, Ontario, and brother Bob HALLOWELL (Joyce) of Comox, British Columbia. Joan was a Registered Nurse and graduate (1954) of the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, when she married the late Dr. Stewart Douglas HORNE (Belleville and Guelph.) In their 31 years together, they raised three children, Cynthia, David and Robert. A wonderfully loving mother, she infused in her children a love of music, laughter, and a positive outlook on life. After her children were grown, Joan continued her care for others by recertifying as a Registered Nurse and working at the Homewood Health Care Centre and Lapointe-Fisher Nursing Home in Guelph, Ontario. She was loved by those with whom she worked and cared for. In 1989, Joan was remarried to Dr. Kenneth M. DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS (Belleville.) In Ken, she found a friend and companion with whom she shared many interests. They enjoyed 17 happy years together sailing on their yacht, "Reflection," travelling the world and sharing their love of classical music and Christian faith. Joan's love of cottaging was fostered during her childhood summers at Bayfield, on Lake Huron. She brought this love to her family and had wonderful memories on both Steenburg and Limerick Lakes. In 1987 she acquired "a piece of Heaven" on Limerick Lake. This was her legacy, for nothing made Joan happier than to spend time with her husband, children and five grandchildren. She will be remembered for her playful sense of humour, unconditional love, inner strength, grace, beauty and quiet dignity. Joan's family wish to commend the outstanding and compassionate care given by Dr. R. LEVESQUE and the Belleville General Hospital oncology nurses, Dr. Ruth MATHIESON, Dr. Katherine ALLEN, Victorian Order of Nurses nurses Carol and Anne, and Red Cross worker Jolanta. The outpouring of love and support from Friends has also comforted us, and we thank in particular the Reverend Peter JOYCE, for whose spiritual guidance, gentle human touch and faith we will be forever grateful Saint Thomas' Anglican Church and its parishioners; Dr. and Mrs. Robert VAUGHAN, who opened their home and hearts to us; Dr. and Mrs. Bill BRUMMITT for their food and fellowship; Dr. Bob and Nancy ELGIE; Mr. and Mrs. Myles MORTON; Jane and Rick SPRAGUE and the many, many others who called, visited, sent flowers, food and prayers. Born in North Walsingham Township on November 11, 1918, dear daughter of the late William THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON and the late former Rachel BROWNLEE. Dorothy was a life long resident of the North Walsingham area. She was owner-operator of Deeg's General Store for 40 years, a member of Langton Baptist Church and a life member of the Langton Women's Institute, just recently receiving her 50 year pin. Loving father of Cathy ATTFIELD (Neal), Vicki LABELLE (Jack,) Dale DEFASIO (Tony) and Gail SYKES. Dear grandfather of 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Died peacefully and with dignity on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at Scarborough Grace Hospital in her 92nd year. Loving wife of the late Thomas GILLESPIE and mother of Joan BROWNLOW (Art,) Tom GILLESPIE (Mary), Eleanore LEWIS (Gary) and Robert GILLESPIE (Barbara). Doris will be sadly missed by her many grandchildren: Karen WATSON (Randy) Scott GILLESPIE (Laurel) Doug GILLESPIE (Tara,) Diane MASON (Glenn,) Lynda HENRY (Peter,) Laura LEWIS (Len GIBLIN) Gordon LEWIS (Melinda), Robyn GIJBELS (Marcel), Neil GILLESPIE, (Debbie) and by her 19 great-grandchildren to whom she was affectionately called "G.G.". She is survived by her brothers, Bill SCOTT and Clarence SCOTT, and many nieces and nephews, all in Midland, Ontario. Doris was an accomplished golfer and curler. She golfed and curled at Scarboro Golf and Country Club. She had many successful bonspiels, most notably, she skipped a team to the Ontario Championships. Although golf and curling were her passions, she will be fondly remembered by family and Friends for her love of Christmas. Doris was affectionately nicknamed "Mother Christmas" and started her shopping and decorating as soon as Halloween finished. The family would like to thank her "Home Instead" caregivers, Kathryn and Shirley and the wonderful staff on 3D at the Scarborough Grace Hospital for their compassionate care. The funeral service will be held at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), on Saturday, September 16th at 11 o'clock.
