A lifelong resident of Toronto, Vera attended Leaside High School,
where her summers were spent as a Senior Playground Supervisor
with Toronto Department of Parks and Recreation. After graduating
from University of Toronto (Victoria College) in 1957, she married
Laurie BROOKES of Saint_John's Newfoundland in 1958, and joined
the T. Eaton Co. executive training program as one of the first

Runner dies in marathon
By James CHRISTIE with a report from Omar EL
AKKAD,
Page
A10
A 41-year-old Toronto runner collapsed near the end of the 2006
Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and died in hospital.
Martin POYSER fell to the pavement at Wellington and Bay Streets,
800 metres from the finish line of the 41.195-kilometre course.
"He was given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation within a minute
at the scene and Emergency Medical Services paramedic service
were there within three minutes to take him to Mount Sinai Hospital,"
said race general manager Dana
ALLEN of Toronto. "They worked
on him for about an hour in hospital, but he did not survive."
Mr. POYSER is the first fatality in the seven-year history of
the event. Last October a 36-year-old Oakville man died after
running a half-marathon in the Toronto Marathon.
"We send our condolences to Martin's family, Friends and fans,"
said Alan BROOKES, the race director. "Martin will be remembered
as a wonderful spirit, with a tremendous passion for running."
Relatives at Mr.
POYSER's house yesterday refused to speak to
a reporter. One family member, contacted yesterday evening, said
he was still on the phone with a doctor regarding what happened.

Crash claims former region mayor
By Hank DANISZEWSKI, Free Press Reporter, Mon., June 5, 2006
Former
Saint
Thomas▼ mayor Joanne
BROOKS, who died in a weekend
crash, left her city a bigger and better place, says former colleague
and Ontario Labour Minister Steve
PETERS.
"She had to be one of the most community-minded people ever in
the history of Saint Thomas,"
PETERS, whom
BROOKS succeeded as
mayor in 1999, said yesterday.
London police confirmed
BROOKS, 63, was killed in a crash on
Highbury Avenue near Dingman Drive Saturday during a heavy rainstorm.
Her death was one of three on area roads that day.
The▼ southbound pickup truck
BROOKS was driving flipped and landed
in a ditch.
BROOKS spent 13 years as a Saint Thomas alderman, topping the polls
three times before being appointed by council to succeed
PETERS
after he won office as an member of provincial parliament.
After 18 months as an appointed mayor,
BROOKS ran for the job
in the 2000 election, but lost to Peter
OSTOJIC by 86 votes.
She ran for mayor again in 2003, but finished second to Jeff
KOHLER, the current mayor.
PETERS said
BROOKS's "crowning achievement" was chairing the
committee that negotiated a 1995 annexation agreement with Southwold
and Yarmouth townships, giving Saint Thomas badly needed land for
new development.
"It was the first annexation in 30 years and allowed for tremendous
residential development. She worked so hard on that," said
PETERS
Born and raised in Saint Thomas,
BROOKS worked for many years as
a salesperson at the auto dealership now known as Saint Thomas
Ford.
She also owned and operated a hairstyling shop and a children's
wear store and was active in many civic groups, including the
Trillium Fund, First United Church and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
BROOKS was a founder and president of Christmas Cares, an organization
that has delivered food and toys to needy Saint Thomas-Elgin families
for 25 years.
BROOKS and her husband, Stirling, had been married for 43 years.
Along with her husband, she's survived by her son, John, daughters
Shelly and Sue and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Williams Funeral Home in Saint Thomas
tomorrow from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held Thursday
at 1 p.m. at First United Church.
Donations may be made to the Joanne
