ARNOLD, Alice (née BARBER) (1932-2006)
Passed away peacefully at Grand River Hospital, Freeport Health Centre on Thursday, April 6, 2006. Loving wife of 48 years to Glen ARNOLD. Mother to Zoë (Mike,) Eve (Tim,) Gwyneth (Murray,) and David (Diana). Grandmother to Sarah, Laura, Eric, Katie, Emily, Angie, Ellen, Hannah and Grace. Sister of Mary CZERNA and Rose BRENNAND (Derrick.) Aunt of Robert, Jeremy, and Victoria. Will be remembered by great nieces Rose and Sophie, sister-in-law of Gwen (Ziggy) KIRCHMEYER and her family Janet (Clyde,) Kathy, and Andrew. Great Aunt of Robbie and Michael. Predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth Hannah (THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON) BARBER (1896-1994,) and Charles FitzRoy (Lord Southampton, 1867-1958, M.B.E. (Debrett's Peerage page 678) and daughter-in-law of the late Eva ARNOLD. Alice went to Harrogate Ladies College, 1940-1949, a private girl's school in Cumbria, England where she studied drama, piano, and violin. Alice immigrated to Canada in 1955 to join her sister, Mary, a speech therapist in Toronto. She met Glen, her future husband to be, at a Club in Toronto in a quiet game of 'knock up' (tennis, anyone?). Alice was part of a generation of women that we now identify as, 'Stay-At-Home Moms', and we became better people as the result of the examples she set in our home: her kindness, generosity and unconditional love. These are some of the qualities she has passed on to us and it is now our turn to live by these examples. Her great strength of character will sustain us in the times ahead. Alice's interests included tennis, music, crafts, and camping with the family, which she referred to fondly as her, 'wilderness experience'. Later, in her return to the work force in the early eighties, she became a member of the Breast Cancer Screening Study Team at Saint Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Years later, in a move to British Columbia, she became a member of the Quilters Guild of Kelowna and had her work exhibited in many of their shows. Friends and family are blessed with examples of her talent and we treasure these gifts she has left us with. Not for one minute will Alice allow us to forget her beautiful spirit and the unconditional love she gave everyone in her time with us! The Arnold family will receive relatives and Friends at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener (519-7498467) from 11: 30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, followed by a celebration of Alice's life at 1: 30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Funeral Home. Peacefully, in the company of her children, at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital on October 2, 2006 in her 88th year, after a lengthy illness following surgery in 2004. Mary was born in Kingston, Ontario, to Doctor Stanley and Beatrice GRAHAM and continued the family tradition of attending Queen's University. She was blessed in her marriages, first to Lt. Col. George Michael (Jim) BILLINGS who passed away in 1966, and then to Col. Richard (Dick) ROSS, who also predeceased her. She is survived by her devoted children, Rosemary, Jane (Ronald THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON) and Michael BILLINGS (Karen PHILLIPS,) her stepson Ken ROSS (Eileen,) stepdaughter Wendy EVES (Frank) and her sister, Barbara MUNRO. Her brother, Dr. Eric GRAHAM, predeceased her. She doted on her grandchildren, Robin BRENT (John), Alison BOOTH, Alexandra and Graham BILLINGS and Erin and Ian ROSS. Persuaded by her husband, Mary reluctantly became a high school teacher in 1961, teaching in Almonte, Germany, Sir Wilfrid Laurier in Ottawa and, lastly, Lisgar Collegiate, where she was an awesome Math teacher until she retired in 1978. She was the adored backbone of our family and will be deeply missed. Gusti came to Canada from Switzerland in 1929 and settled in the Beach. He began a long and rewarding career as the head chef at several different hotels namely The Old Mill and The Royal York. He took great joy from his family, his long walks and all sports especially horse racing. Gusti had a wonderful sense of humour and an amazing spirit throughout his life and we will miss him dearly. Suddenly at University Hospital, London on Monday, March 20, 2006, Jack Ernest BRESETT, age 67 of Lake Valley Grove, Lambton Shores passed away surrounded by his loving family. Best friend and loving husband of Shirley (BUCHSER.) Dearly loved father of Brenda and Lanny HULL, Victor and Kathy BRESETT and Gerald BRESETT. Devoted grandfather of Adam and Amy HULL, Victoria, Josh and Mason BRESETT. Cherished uncle of several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Ross, and sisters Mary and Alison. Jack was born in Sarnia on September 24, 1938. Jack was the Business Manager for Local 23 Bricklayer and a 50 year life member of Brick and Allied Craft Union. Jack was recognized as a gifted mason in the bricklayer trade. Jack was a proud grandfather who provided support and encouragement to all of his grandchildren. At Jack's request cremation has taken place and a private service will be held for family. Surviving is her daughter Lois (HORNICK) and her husband Leonard SALISBURY; two grandchildren: Katherine and her husband George ALLMAN of R.R.#3 Dresden, Brian HORNICK and his wife Nancy DILL of London; two great-grandchildren: Marnie and husband Dan CUMMING, Trevor ALLMAN; one great-great-grandchild Connor CUMMING; three step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. A wonderfully full and long life came peacefully to an end after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, Mary Helen BRESETTE of Sarnia died peacefully at Bluewater Health Mitton Street Site, surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Sarnia in January 1911 and had lived in her family home her entire life. She worked in the Prestolite, starting on the line and moving to the office where she worked until her retirement in 1977. Aunt Mary enjoyed her life filling it with travels, bridge club, her gardens, feeding the birds and spending time with her family. Mary was a member of Trinity Anglican Church. She was a fiercely independent lady and this enabled her to stay in her own home until now. Survived by her dear sister Orpha SITTER. Very special aunt to Melody and Frank VANPRAET, Laurene and Don SMITH, Arnie and Chris BRESETTE, Brenda and Jerome LESNY and their families. Dear aunt of Pat and Carol SITTER, Marjorie and Bill FYDELL, Jim and Helen PAULLEY, Jack and Janice PAULLEY. Dear grandmother of Allison and Jessica, Cody, Crystal S., Dana and Rosie, Sheridan and Jolene, Dallas and Candita, Sheena and Ken, Lorrie, Rob, Mike, Jodi, Ty, Caprice, Brandy, Penny, Bud, Crystal G., also many great grandchildren. Dear brother of Joe Jr. of Minnesota, Sam Sr., Bruce and Vanessa, Albert and Georgina all of Kettle Point and Teleford Sr. and Catherine of Alabama. Predeceased by one brother Carlyle (Mink) (2000).
