Police lay drunk-driving charge as mother killed while jogging
A Family Shattered Forever
By Oliver MOORE and Nicole
O'REILLY, with a report from Christie
BLATCHFORD,
Page A1
A mother of four young children was run down and killed while
jogging near her Richmond Hill home in an incident police are
blaming on drunk driving.
Terri CALLAWAY was out for her usual evening run through the
subdivisions near Lake Wilcox on Tuesday when a speeding station
wagon jumped the curb and struck her, police say.
The vehicle was travelling well over the speed limit when it
hit Ms. CALLAWAY, York Regional Police Constable Michael
KASSAY
said. She died at the scene and a man was arrested shortly after.
Ms. CALLAWAY's husband, Gareth, said at the family home last
night that the driver was "not worth wasting any emotion on."
He added that he'd given a picture of their children to the police,
asking that they pass it to the driver. "In certain respects,
it would be nice if he lived to be 95 and woke up every morning
and gets to see the photograph," he said in an interview.
After striking the 37-year-old woman, the vehicle smashed into
a parked car and toppled a concrete light pole. Shattered glass
was strewn around the scene yesterday and tire skid marks stretched
across one of the lawns.
The case, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino
said last night, "so vivid and so tragic," perfectly illustrates
that "whether at the end of a gun or the hood of a car, the end
result" is often the same.
"It's a calculated decision to drink or use drugs and drive,"
he told The Globe and Mail in a telephone interview, "as much
as putting a gun on your belt and going to shoot someone, but
this is something we have absolute control over. We can't blame
anybody, we can't pass off the responsibility. We choose to do
it. And we have to choose to get serious about stopping it."
According to people living nearby, the man arrested after the
crash lived only half a kilometre away.
Ms. CALLAWAY was on the sidewalk when she was hit, running her
normal route at approximately 8: 45 at night. She was gone longer
than usual but her husband hadn't begun to worry, not even when
he saw flashing lights from his backyard. Curious, he eventually
asked a neighbour to watch his children so he could find out
what was happening.
He was kept away from the scene by police, who, after learning
his identity, asked him about his wife's appearance and the clothing
she had been wearing. Only then did he begin to realize the seriousness
of the situation.
People on Ms.
CALLAWAY's street near Yonge Street and Bloomington
Road described it as a recently built but tightly knit subdivision.
The couple moved into the area when it was built, roughly five
or six years ago. Their children -- nine-year-old Dylan, Rachel,
who turns 8 next week, six-year-old Matthew and three-year-old
Ethan -- were active in sports.
Agidia LANZOLLA, who lives across the street from the family,
said that the news had flown around the neighbourhood, and that
residents are still in shock.
"They're very nice people, they're lovely. I just couldn't believe
it," she said. "I'm a walker, not a jogger, but I do that route
every morning. She was doing the same route that I was doing.
This morning, I was going to go out and I said, 'Forget it.'"
News of her death also raced around the Southern Ontario running
community, with some noting angrily that joggers are not safe
even if they stay off the roads.
A few blocks away from the
CALLAWAY's home, people living near
the crash site described finding a harrowing scene Tuesday evening.
"My husband went over and it was horrible, she was still breathing
but it was shallow, then she died," said Linda
SANTIA, who lives
across the street.
The crash noise shook the neighbourhood, she said. Her 35-year-old
son ran outside to find a male driver standing dazed next to
a car with blood on his hands and face.
"We thought he was shocked… he sat outside our house on our bench,"
she said, adding that her son remembered the man from high school
and knew he still lived nearby.
Police arrested Matthew
JUNKERT at the scene. The 33-year-old
remained in custody overnight and appeared in a Newmarket court
yesterday on charges of drunk driving causing death and criminal
negligence causing death.
His court appearance came the same day the Ontario Provincial
Police officially launched their five-week Festive Reduce Impaired
Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) campaign.
Drunk driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada.
When Commissioner Fantino was sworn in last month, he identified
it as a priority. The Ontario Provincial Police laid 390,000 charges
under the Highway Traffic Act last year, including nearly 11,000 for
impaired driving.
Yesterday, Commissioner Fantino said that, in a world where so
much is beyond the control of the ordinary citizen, he is bewildered
that people are still reluctant to exercise control over their
own conduct where and when they can. "These are decisions people
make," he said. "They decide to drink or take drugs and drive,
and very often, we let them -- Friends and family."
He said the time is right for society to get serious about it.
"We've done a good job with domestic violence and gun violence,
but we have to pay equal attention to what's happening on our
roads and to the innocent people who are cut down on them."
