At London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus, on Friday December 22, 2006, Rosemary Marie (née BAILEY) MUNROE of Glencoe in her 76th year. Born in Imperoyal, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Olga BAILEY. She moved to Glencoe, Ontario from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in 1969 with her husband Glenn and their four children. Rosemary was full of fun and enjoyed many evenings around the fire pit in her back yard raising a glass with Friends and family. She was always ready with a joke and a smile, and was kind and generous to all. She was a treasure that will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Survived by her daughter, Glenda (Peter) CONNOR and 3 sons, Thomas (Susan,) Brian (Luci,) Barry (Laurie) and grandchildren, Hannah, Dierdre, Kirk, Tania, Sabrina, Jessica, Jasmine, Damian, Heather and Amy and great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Dillon and Noah and 2 sisters, Patricia (Pat) BLACKBEARD and Margaret (Peggy) BOWSER. BLACKBURN's writing brought war home

Ottawa -- George BLACKBURN, who was a journalist, a composer, a songwriter, a public servant, a war hero and an acclaimed author, died in an Ottawa hospital Wednesday. He was 90.
He was a gregarious, fun-loving, piano-playing story-teller with a twinkling eye and a gift for a telling phrase.
He wrote award-winning songs, a play that was performed in a purpose-built theatre at Upper Canada Village, and produced and wrote television and radio documentaries.
His three-volume memoir of his harrowing, Second World War career as a forward artillery observer, won praise when it was published in the 1990s. He was showered with prizes and awards, including the Order of Canada.
The books, The Guns of Normandy, The Guns of Victory and Where the Hell are the Guns?, recounted his war experiences, running from the last, idyllic pre-war summer of 1939 when he was working as a reporter in Pembroke, through the hellish time on the front lines calling down artillery fire on enemy positions.
They were written in an unusual first-person style, which gave them a chilling "you are there" realism and they offered a unique account of the role that the gunners played in the bitter, brutal campaign from Normandy through the Netherlands.
BLACKBURN was one of the longest-serving forward observers in the Canadian army. It was a dangerous job and most of his fellow observers were killed or wounded as they plied their hazardous trade within sight of the enemy.
The observers job was to direct fire from gun batteries positioned well behind them onto enemy targets, correcting the aim of the gunners. Because they controlled the artillery, they were key targets for the Germans, who knew if they killed the observer, they blinded the gunners.
BLACKBURN won the Military Cross for protecting a Canadian bridgehead in Holland.
And his books had impact.
"Anyone who reads this will put it down in wonderment, whispering softly, 'So that's what it was like,' " wrote Cliff Chadderton of the War Amps.
Quill and Quire, in a review of The Guns of Normandy, said it "brings us as close as we will ever come to the tension and turmoil of the fighting in Normandy half a century ago."

Predeceased by her husband Bruce Cowles TOWNLEY and brother Bud (Anne.) She was a wonderful mother to Andrea (David) and Dee-Dee to Kate, Megan and Andrew. A loving partner and friend to John BLACKEY and great Friends with his children Sue (Chris), David (Cheryl), Karen, Gordon (Karen), Pat (Rich) and their children. Survived by her sister Barb (Bill), and David (Helgard), and her niece Nancy (Richard), along with many other nieces and nephews. She lived her life to the fullest, including her passions for gardening and travel. She fought a courageous battle against cancer. David will be sadly missed by his loving children Linda NASH (David) of Stoney Creek and Jenepher OLDROYD (Bill) of Brantford; cherished Papa to Stuart, Lyndsey and Tyler; survived by his brothers and sisters Jock, Pat (Ian) BENNETT, all of Inverness, Scotland, Joyce PEACE of England, Charlie (Betty) of Brantford, Rena (Evan) MacDONALD of Bayfield; predeceased by sister Betty MASON and brother George. David will be remembered as a loving brother-in-law by Rosa of Brantford, Beth (Jeffrey), Chrissie (Peter), Rhoda and Alister all of England; dearly missed by his best friend of many years Roddy GRANT. David BLACKIE served in the Second World War touring in Burma, East Indochina, India and Africa. He retired from the Brant County Board of Education after 29 years in 1984, was Past President of the Sons of Scotland and was an active member of Lodge St. Andrew, Masonic Lodge in Scotland and Reba Lodge #515 when he arrived in Canada.
