TERRY, Pamela Anne (BECKWITH)
Born June 10, 1926, in Vancouver, British Columbia, died peacefully in the early morning, November 25, 2006, in Toronto, Ontario. She was pre-deceased in 2003 by her son, Symon Francis BECKWITH. She will be dearly missed by her children, Robin Jane BECKWITH (Houston, Texas), Jonathan Lewis BECKWITH (Shanghai, China), and Lawrence Matthew BECKWITH (Toronto, Ontario;) her brother, Robin TERRY (Sooke, British Columbia;) her daughter-in-law, Teri DUNN; her son-in-law Tom PHILBROOK; her grandchildren, Fawn ANDERSON, Alison Jane BECKWITH and Juliet Braden BECKWITH; and her great-grandchild, Venice ANDERSON. Pamela was a passionate trailblazer when it came to the theatre. When she first came to Toronto, she was a student of Sterndale BENNETT, director of the Canadian Theatre School. In addition to acting in the early 1950s with the American Forces Theatre Company, touring in Europe with the father of her children and her husband of more than 20 years, John BECKWITH, she acted in Toronto in several plays, with notable appearances as The Maid in Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, and Sonya in Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. She then turned to direction, with her early success marked by three plays by Ben Jonson, including Volpone with Timothy Findley as Volpone. She also directed Canadian poet and novelist, Margaret Atwood, when Atwood was a student at University of Toronto. Pamela directed the first Canadian production of Becket's Waiting for Godot in 1957, winning the Dominion Drama Festival's best direction award. The following year, she again won the Dominion Drama Festival award for best direction with a production of James Reaney's first play, The Killdeer. The Canadian poet and playwright, who always referred to her as "my first director," dedicated his play, The Easter Egg, to her. She directed it twice during the 1960s. Her forward looking vision prompted her to direct the first Canadian productions, in the 1970s, of plays by Peter Handke, Vaclav Havel and others. Her natural talent as an actress, dramatic coach, but particularly as a director, was highly respected. With a quick intelligence, immense sensitivity and understanding of nuance in her directing ventures, great command of all the elements of direction - including set construction, lighting, music, blocking, and costume - she also directed Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat, Poulenc's La Voix Humaine, and Reaney and Beckwith's Night Blooming Cereus, which combined musical elements with theatrical understanding. With humor and a sense of delight, Pamela also directed two original children's musicals by Pat Patterson for the Toronto Children's Theatre. A long-time proponent of avant garde theatre, with a strong philosophical bent, Pamela's contribution to the growth of theatre in Toronto is immeasurable. Just this past October, Pamela took charge of an opportunity for the University Alumnae Dramatic Club, by arranging and overseeing its participation in Toronto's first Nuit Blanche, a co-operative and free open-all-night celebration by the city's cultural organizations. Pamela, your brilliance will be missed by all upon whose light it shed. A celebration of her life will be held in Toronto on Thursday, November 30 at 2: 00 p.m. at the Alumnae Theatre (corner Adelaide Street East and Berkeley Street). In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Doctors Without Borders, Care Canada or a small, independent arts organization of your choice.
