Boy, 8, dies after fall into Brampton creek
By Oliver MOORE, Page A8
An eight-year-old boy died yesterday after falling into a fast-flowing branch of Etobicoke Creek swollen by torrential rain.
Police searched for hours before they found Simbarashe JOWA floating far down the creek from where he went in.
The boy, known by his family as Simba, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Two children who went into the water to try to save him were pulled to safety from the creek, near the busy Brampton intersection of Bramalea Road and Steeles Avenue.
The children lived nearby and were not supposed to play near the creek without adult supervision. A relative said that all three had been in a backyard about 100 metres away when they were apparently drawn to the water's edge.
"They came here by themselves," said Stacy PADMORE, who identified herself as Simba's aunt. "They know they're not supposed to."
The screams of the children attracted passersby. Joe BARBOSA rescued the 12- and nine-year-old children who had tried to help Simba.
"I seen two kids just screaming for help in the water," he said. "The first thing I did I looked for the safety nets there, but by the time you grab them, the kids are way down the water. I ran down and picked up the girl off the water first…. Then I ran further down and picked up the second kid out the water."
Mr. BARBOSA was unable to save Simba. Hours later, emergency crews found him about a kilometre from where Mr. BARBOSA had plucked the other two to safety. Simba was pronounced dead at William Osler Health Centre, said Peel Regional Police Constable Pete BRANDWOOD.
The Toronto area was hammered yesterday with torrential rain, leading the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to issue an advisory about possible flooding.

WILLIAMS, Orvel Stanley
His devoted family sadly announces the death of Orvel, on January 28, 2006, at the age of 88. His beloved wife and close companion, Della (née FOURNIER) is left to mourn, together with their three loving daughters Karen (Paul DZATKO,) Shelley (Scott BARCLAY,) and Heather (Marko NOGA,) as well as "the apples of his eye," his adored and adoring grandchildren, Kyle and Jillian NOGA. Orvel was a Torontonian, born-and-bred, who recalled his life with his four siblings, raised by their deserted mother during the Dirty Thirties, when times were hard and people were poor. He originally taught himself to play the guitar, progressed to lessons and soon began to play professionally with small groups of musicians in gigs around the city and in cottage country during the summer months. Before his marriage, he worked at Massey Harris and then became the owner of the BA Gasoline Station at Queen and Gladstone from 1947 to 1953. Playing tennis kept him in good shape and together with Della, they were avid supporters of their local tennis club (Orchard Heights) and played for many years. In fact, Orvel played right up to the age of 86. He was a gentle man and gentleman, a family man who had a long and fulfilling life centering around his family and Friends, who now have many fond memories to sustain them in their sorrow. "And I love you so" A Memorial Gathering in celebration of Orvel's Life will be held at a future date at The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, 1535 South Gateway Road, Mississauga (905) 602-1580.

In loving memory of our Daughters Michelle STARRET and Jessica BARD Oct 12th, 1990
Some time has passed since that day you were taken from us without a warning. We miss you still. We often sit and wonder, would you be the nurse you wanted to be Jessica? Would you be the journalist Michelle? Would you both have families of your own? We will never know. You will be forever remembered in our hearts. Deeply loved and missed, Mom and Dad
