(MAYOR) of Whitchurch,
Stouffville. A devoted and proud Baba to Christopher and his
wife Karla of Halifax, and Stephen and his wife Sheila of Kitchener,
granddaughters Lindsay, Lisa and Lesley, all of Whitchurch, Stouffville.
We are thrilled that Baba lived long enough to enjoy being Big
Baba to her great-granddaughter Jayden Ella. Baba proudly shared
her Ukrainian heritage with her daughters-in-law and her 5 grandchildren.
We celebrated all the major Ukrainian feasts and special holidays
together. Mom was famous for her pyrohy and holobsti, and that
tradition will live on. Mom lived for the past 24 years at St.
Demetrius Residence. She worked tirelessly for St. Demetrius
Church and gave her time freely as a volunteer in the kitchen
for many many years. We have been told that she did the work
of two men. Her gentle manner and kind smile will be remembered
by all her fellow workers and Friends. Rest in peace Mom, we
will miss you terribly. You have left a great legacy and we thank
you for being a great Mother, Baba and Big Baba. We know you
will always be watching over us. Your loving family. Special
thank you to the doctors and nursing staff of Markham Stouffville

Teen charged in deadly crash
A Kitchener woman was killed in a T-bone collision when hit by
a car full of teens.
By Jane SIMS,
Free
Press
Reporter,
Sun., October 15, 2006
A teenage driver faces impaired driving charges after a carload
of West Perth teens collided with a Kitchener woman's car late
Friday, killing her.
Perth
Ontario
Provincial Police said Trista
GLIEDT, 23, died
at the scene of the T-bone collision at Perth Line 36 and Road 150
between Sebringville and Mitchell.
GLIEDT was travelling east when her car was struck on the passenger
side by a car travelling north, police said.
Two 16-year-olds, two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old, all from
West Perth, were taken to Stratford General Hospital.
The 16-year-old driver was charged with impaired driving causing
death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, criminal negligence
causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
He is to appear in Stratford court November 30. He cannot be
identified because of provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice
Act.
The crash has rekindled concerns about teens driving drunk, particularly
in rural areas.
But Jodi BAKER, principal of Mitchell District high school, said
special programs have been presented to students and more are
planned this year to discuss the dangers of impaired driving.
"We continue to try and be proactive and provide students with
an educational opportunities to know about drinking and driving
and the impact of it,"
BAKER said.
Her school community has been fortunate because it has not had
to deal with recent incidents of teens and drunk driving, she
said
"Our thoughts and prayers will be with the families."
Pauline NEWTON, president of the London chapter of Mothers Against
Drunk Driving said her organization "is very concerned about
the representation of youth in these type of crashes."
A University of Western Ontario study completed for Mothers Against
Drunk Driving Canada recommends drivers under the age of 21 should
have a zero blood-alcohol level.
New drivers are required to have no alcohol in their system until
they graduate to a G2 licence.
"We feel young drivers are inexperienced drivers. They're immature,
and they're should be a point-zero alcohol tolerance to the age
of 21," NEWTON said.
Allan KEITH, regional representative for Ontario Students Against
Impaired Driving for Huron, Perth, Middlesex and Elgin counties,
said Friday's crash is a sad reminder of why public education
on the effects of drunk driving is essential.
"To have something like this happen just pushes us even more
to try and get the message out and make people aware these things
happen," he said.
"They shouldn't because they are 100-per-cent preventable."
Meanwhile, bad weather was cited as a factor in a crash yesterday
that sent a Huron Ontario Provincial Police officer to the London
Health Sciences Centre by air ambulance after his cruiser left
the road and struck a utility pole about 9 a.m. in northern Huron
County.
The officer, Const. Dave
MOUNSEY, was on his way to a transport
truck rollover near Wroxeter. There were no injuries in the truck
crash.
High winds and wet snow made for treacherous driving conditions.
Huron Ontario Provincial Police said the road was covered with
slush.
MOUNSEY, an eight-year police veteran, is listed in serious condition.

Homicide ruling worries neighbours
By Patrick
MALONEY, Free Press Reporter, Wed. November 8, 2006
The death of an elderly Saint Thomas man found in his apartment
building elevator has been ruled a homicide, shocking other tenants.
Marcel LACHANCE, 77, was found dead Saturday in the Grand Central
apartments at 294 Talbot St. Saint Thomas police originally said
he may have died of natural causes.
But last night, investigators said the well-liked man -- known
for riding on his trademark scooter -- died as a result of foul
play.
"It's left the building in a state of shock," said Kay
BAKER,
68, who knew
LACHANCE to say hello.
"I quiver. I keep my door locked (and) I never used to. I just
stay inside here."
LACHANCE lived on the seventh floor of the 12-storey complex
attached to another apartment highrise.
Saint Thomas police were called to the building last Saturday after
LACHANCE's body was found in the elevator.
One officer at the scene that day told reporters he believed
the man died of natural causes. But it was ruled a homicide after
a post-mortem at London's University Hospital yesterday.
LACHANCE moved out of the building a few years ago until his
wife died, then returned, said Doreen
CAIRNS, who also lives
on the seventh floor.
She said he was friendly and had no problems with anyone.
"He was a very nice guy," said
CAIRNS, 76, who lives with her
husband.
"I used to tease him -- I told him he should get a trailer to
go behind his scooter so he could give us women a ride.
"(This) is a scary thought, until they find out who did it."
Police are still investigating and issued a statement last night.
A spokesperson declined comment.
"Police are reminding citizens… to be mindful of personal security
strategies, such as looking doors…" it read.

ELDER,
John
Munro, M.D.
John Munro
ELDER, husband, father, grandfather and pediatrician
to many generations of young Montrealers, died early Tuesday,
November 14, 2006, at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal,
at the age of 82, after a lengthy battle with dementia, compounded
by heart and respiratory illness. He is survived by his wife,
Janet, and children Matthew (Jane
BAKER,)
Katharine▲▼
(James▼
DEACON)
and Stephen (Josee
MAURICE,) and son-in-law David
POWELL, and
eight grandchildren. His daughter Judith died in 2002. John represented
the third generation of physicians in the
ELDER family, all of
whom were educated at McGill University, and prominent staff
members of the university's teaching hospitals. He served in
the Royal Canadian Artillery in northwest Europe during the Second
World War. After the war, John returned to McGill, entering the
Medical
School in 1947. He married Janet
DICKSON/DIXON on December 27,
1949. He graduated from McGill Medical School in 1951 and, after
specializing in Pediatrics, entered private practice in 1956.
A mong his many positions and achievements, John was medical
director of the Mackay Centre (handicapped children), founding
director of the Montreal Children's Hospital Adolescent Clinic,
director of the Montreal General Hospital Newborn Nursery, a
board member of Camp Amy Molson and on the staff of the Children's
Service Centre. He is a past president of the Canadian Paediatric
Society. His dedication to youth extended to the educational
community, and he served several years as a commissioner for
the Westmount Protestant School Board. John retired in 1997,
but remained beloved by his former patients, some of whom would
greet him on his frequent walks in his neighbourhood. His non-professional
interests over the years included reading, golf, sailing and,
above all, tending to the trees and shrubs at his beloved property
at Lake Manitou. He was a dinnertime raconteur who loved the
company of all age groups, even the youngest - not surprising,
given his chosen profession. The funeral will take place Friday,
November 17, 2006, at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Wray Walton
Wray, 5610 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal (corner Marcil Avenue).
Visitation at the funeral home on Thursday, November 16, from
7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Montreal Children's
Hospital Foundation or charities connected with the above-mentioned
organizations would be most appreciated.
