A resident of Chatham, Nora I. MILLER died on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance at the age of 91. Born in Chatham, daughter of the late George H. and Jennie A. McKERRALL) MILLER. Sister of Ethel MILLER of Chatham, Douglas MILLER of Arizona and the late Reginald MILLER (1980) and Roy MILLER (1998.) Sister-in-law of the late Margaret GORDON and Jean MILLER (2005.) Aunt of Craig MILLER (Gloria), Chatham; Mary Jo BAIETTI (Norm), Walnut Creek, California.; Bob MILLER, Las Vegas, Nevada.; Elaine YOUNGSON (Art), Windsor; Patricia MILLER (Duff WALKER), Val Caron, Ontario., and Marilyn HANNA (Ken) Richmond, British Columbia. Also survived by several great nieces and nephews. Nora retired as an elementary school teacher with the Kent County Board of Education after teaching for 2½ years at S.S. #25 in Chatham Township and 35 years at McKeough Public School in Chatham. She was a member of the Superannuated Women's Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers of Ontario. Nora was also a member of Chalmers United Church and the United Church Women She was an avid bridge player. Predeceased by her husband Phil (2004) and her mother Violet (1993). Born in West Ham, England, April 3rd, 1910. Marjorie passed peacefully at Mackenzie Place, Newmarket on the evening of March 8th, 2006, in the presence of her daughter. Marjorie was second oldest, and only surviving child, of the late Henry and Charlotte SAYER, having been predeceased by her brother Leslie, and sisters Hazel BRIDGE and Isobel McCANN. Marjorie was also predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, William (Bill) and by her son-in-law Wayne NETTIE. Marjorie is survived by her daughter Sylvia NETTIE, son Mark, and daughter-in-law Christine, grandchildren Scott Nettie, John BAIGRIE, Sharon BAIGRIE and step-granddaughter Debbie IVICZ, great-grandchildren Jessica BAIGRIE, Charlotte NETTIE, and Malcolm NETTIE. Marjorie's constant loving support will be greatly missed by her family. In loving memory of Wilhelmina Joyce SMITH, April 15, 1936 to December 18, 2005.
Wilhelmina SMITH, a resident of R.R. 1 Mindemoya, died at the Mindemoya Hospital on Sunday December 18, 2005, at the age of 69 years.
She was born at Little Current, daughter of the late Robert and Nina (PIPHER) EADIE. She was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Anglican Church. Wilhelmina had a variety of interests, which included gardening, flowers and vegetables, canning the vegetables from her garden and writing letters. She enjoyed keeping in touch with people through her letter writing to both family and Friends. In earlier years, she loved to take the kids skating. She enjoyed music, both hymns and old country music and she loved to sing when working around the house, making up songs about how she felt that day. Wilhelmina liked to dance, and to visit places she used to go as a child. She loved animals, especially her chickens, and will be remembered for always having 2 clocks, set at different times, one fast and one regular time. Many fond memories will be cherished by her loving family. Predeceased by her husband John Ross SMITH, January 1996. Dearly loved mother of Marilyn of Oshawa, Douglas of Mindemoya, William of Mindemoya and Connie, fiance Keith OSMOND of Mindemoya. FICK, Ruth Anna (formerly POWERS, née WOOLL)
Died peacefully in her 92nd year after losing a fight with pneumonia in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Ruth was born in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late John Oliver WOOLL and the former Edith Eliza BAILEY. Ruth attended Saginaw High and continued her education with secretarial studies. She met a young Canadian Evangelist, the Reverend George Max POWERS, senior. They fell in love, were married, moved to Sarnia, had four daughters and later moved to Walsingham where George pastored the Free Methodist church; there they had a son. George died of cancer in 1947 and Ruth continued as a lay pastor in Walsingham for the next three years. In 1951 Ruth was again in love and married William Ernest FICK, senior, of Marston. The family moved to a farm at R.R.#3, Tillsonburg where Ruth had another son. Ruth had a full life, raising a family, farming, playing an active role in the Cornell Women's Institute, and for many years holding positions of service at the Tillsonburg Free Methodist church: youth leader, Sunday school teacher, pianist, organist and board secretary. Ernest died in 1990 and in 1993 Ruth moved to the senior apartments at 31 Maple Lane, Tillsonburg, where she met many new Friends. In 2005 she moved to the F.J. Davey Home in Sault Ste. Marie, where she quickly adapted, again making more new Friends and enjoying delicious meals. Until contracting pneumonia, she remained mentally active, e-mailing and chatting online, and hearing, for the first time, a live performance of Handel's Messiah - a special treat was arriving early, catching the end of rehearsal and hearing her favourite song, the Hallelujah Chorus, twice. It is common to hear her Friends and family say they valued her Friendship and prayer support. Her passing is their loss, not hers. She will be deeply missed. Ruth was the dear mother and mother-in-law of Lois STOVER; Tillsonburg; Geraldine POWERS (deceased 2001;) Edith GARWOOD (deceased 1999,) Don (Pat) GARWOOD, Uruguay; Ruth (Joseph) INFURNARI, Dunnville; George POWERS (deceased 1995,) Linda MAE- POWERS, Haliburton; and William (Carol) FICK, Sault Ste. Marie. Ruth had 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She prayed for them all daily. Ruth was predeceased by one sister and four brothers. Ruth is resting at Verhoeve Funeral Home, 262 Broadway, Tillsonburg, Ontario (519-842-4238) where service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, January 21st, 2006 at 1: 30 p.m. by Reverend Douglas J. Predeceased by his wife Patricia (1996), father Albert (1965,) mother Vera (1995) and mother-in-law Erma BEATY (2000.) Survived by sisters Karen (John) FELDER of Nairn, Nora (Don) HOLDEN of Ingersoll, Phyllis (Jim) STOAKLEY of Norwich; brothers-in-law Bruce (Helen) of Vernon, British Columbia and Keith (Leslie) of Toronto. He will also be mourned by his godchildren, Stephan BAILEY of Vancouver and Barrie Jordon JANZ of Edmonton and many nieces and nephews. Barrie's academic portfolio consisted of a B.A.(Hon.) (1964) University of Western Ontario, M.A. (1966) University of Western Ontario, M.A.Sc. (1968), in Applied Psychology, University of Waterloo, Ph.D. (1980) in Counselling Psychology, University of Alberta. Barrie had retired from the University of Manitoba, Dept. of Psychology where he had been the Director of Student Couselling for many years. Upon retirement, he pursued his love of travel and reading. His generosity showed itself in the time spent and the numerous donations to many institutions including the Association of Community Living in Beausejour, Manitoba of which he was past Director. Two more bodies head home

Kandahar -- For the third time in two weeks Canadian troops formed long lines yesterday to salute comrades who have died in increasingly violent attacks by anti-government insurgents.
Sgt. Darcy TEDFORD, based at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, and Pte. Blake WILLIAMSON from Ottawa were ambushed Saturday as they patrolled a road west of Kandahar that's being built by Canadians. The men were killed and two others were wounded in a hail of rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire.
Both TEDFORD and WILLIAMSON served with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment.
A bagpiper played Amazing Grace as the men's caskets were borne by some of their closest Friends into a waiting C-130 Hercules that will carry them home.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered his condolences yesterday.
"It is with courage and heroism that Sgt. Darcy TEDFORD and Pte. Blake WILLIAMSON have sacrificed their life to bring stability, democracy and peace in Afghanistan," he said. "I know the prayers and thoughts of all Canadians are with their family and Friends during this sad and difficult time."
The two soldiers were killed when a rocket-propelled grenade exploded over their heads.
They were guarding a road being built by Canadians that would link the violent Panjwaii district with a main highway.
Canadian troops returned fire and called in air support for the two-hour fight that followed. Military officials would not discuss insurgent casualties.
The road, adjacent to farmland and thick marijuana fields, is a favourite target for such attacks by those who are bent on thwarting development sponsored by coalition forces.
Of the other two soldiers who were wounded Saturday, one has been released from hospital while the other is in good condition. Their names have not been released.
Nor were many details immediately available about TEDFORD or WILLIAMSON. Three soldiers who served with the men told Canadian Press that they were instructed to not speak publicly for at least 24 hours.
Soldiers in the dangerous Panjwaii region west of Kandahar say there just aren't enough of them to properly clear the area of insurgents who have stepped up attacks since a major three-week offensive against the Taliban last month was declared a success by North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Six Canadians have died along the unfinished road or the 16-square-kilometre area around it since late September.
"The Taliban don't like roads because roads mean progress," said Brig.-Gen. David Fraser, the Canadian and North Atlantic Treaty Organization commander in southern Afghanistan.

Linda BOYLAN of London, Kate McCRINDLE and Ted BAILEY of Grand Rapids, Brenda and Rob HOFFMAN of London, Jennifer and Greg COX of Windsor and Angela BOYLAN of Sarnia. Dear grandfather of Meagan, Matthew, Andrew, Michael, Sean, Jasmine, Justine, Joseph, Stella and baby Cox. At London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus, on Friday December 22, 2006, Rosemary Marie (née BAILEY) MUNROE of Glencoe in her 76th year. Born in Imperoyal, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Olga BAILEY. She moved to Glencoe, Ontario from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in 1969 with her husband Glenn and their four children. Rosemary was full of fun and enjoyed many evenings around the fire pit in her back yard raising a glass with Friends and family. She was always ready with a joke and a smile, and was kind and generous to all. She was a treasure that will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Survived by her daughter, Glenda (Peter) CONNOR and 3 sons, Thomas (Susan,) Brian (Luci,) Barry (Laurie) and grandchildren, Hannah, Dierdre, Kirk, Tania, Sabrina, Jessica, Jasmine, Damian, Heather and Amy and great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Dillon and Noah and 2 sisters, Patricia (Pat) BLACKBEARD and Margaret (Peggy) BOWSER. On Sunday, May 28, 2006 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Colleen May, aged 67, passed away peacefully. Born May 22, 1939 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. She was one of three daughters born to Lyle and Viola (née HARPER) CAVANAGH. She is survived by her loving husband Allan, and sons Boyd (Rhonda) and their children Geralee, Joseph, Jacob and Rebekah; Burton (Dr Kirsten WESTBERG) and their children Anna and Erik of Red Deer, Alberta: and Raymond of Yorkton. She is also survived by her sisters Rhona BOEHMER of Regina, and Carol (Abe) SCHELLENBERG of Abbotsford, British Columbia, as well as nieces and nephews and cousins. Colleen, as Chief Executive Officer and President of NorthEastern Cablevision served several terms as President of Saskcable and served also as Vice-President of the Canadian Cable Television Association. As a woman in a nontraditional role in the Cable industry, she was recognized as the 'Outstanding Woman of Canadian Cable' in 1987. She served her community, province and nation in many organizations and volunteer capacities over the years including; President of Jaycettes of Canada 1976, Regional Director for Encounters with Canada - The Terry Fox Foundation, President of the Arthritis Society of Saskatchewan 1983-84, and for many years served as a Board member on the Council for Canadian Unity. Colleen was a member of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, she was appointed Chair in 2000. A position she held until her passing. Locally, Colleen was an active member and past President of The Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival. She was also a founding board member of the recently established Saskatchewan Foundation of the Arts. Colleen's dynamics and sincere contributions to the betterment of community and society were acknowledged on many occasions including being the recipient of The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal 1961 for encouraging Arts in Saskatchewan; The Queens Golden Jubilee Medal 2002; and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal and Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal in 2005. Colleens' family and Friends will cherish her memory, remembering her as a model of courage, determination and grace. The funeral service will take place at 2: 00 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2006 from Westview United Church, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Myfanwy GRAY/GREY (née BAILEY,) loving sister of Bruce BAILEY of Perth, on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. Pat is survived by her children and grandchildren: Debbie, Mike, Leah, and Galen SHEEHAN; Sandra, Steven, Stephanie, Andrew, and Kate RADCLIFFE; Jeff, Ryan, and Alex GRAY/GREY. HALTON, Douglas Eric (January 28, 1916-March 23, 2006)
Douglas Eric HALTON passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and Friends at Fairview Lodge, Whitby on the afternoon of March 23rd, 2006, in his 91st year. Doug was a decorated World War 2 Veteran having served with the British Army (Essex Yeomanry, Royal Artillery and Indian Airborne Division) in Europe, the Middle East, and India. 'Eric' arrived in Canada in 1954 with his wife Gwen and family and was employed at Shore Gas, Consumers Gas and the Durham Board of Education. Douglas was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Gwendoline May HALTON (BAILEY.) He is survived by his sister Kitty GOULD of Stratford. His immediate family of five sons consists of: Allan and his wife Sherillyn (Law), and grandchildren Robin, Ryan and Tracy of Whitby and Tara BOTTAN (Brian) of Thunder Bay; Barry of Tweed; David and his wife Linda (Edwards) of Whitby, and grandchildren Phillip (Stephanie) and great-grandchildren Lily and Lief of Toronto, granddaughter Heather THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON (Jason) and great-granddaughter Paige of Brooklin; Ronald and his wife Carol (Sutton), and grandchildren Dawn and Colin of Fenelon Falls; Terry of Whitby. Douglas will be fondly remembered by longtime friend Stu McLERIE of Oshawa and family and Friends in England, New Zealand and U.S.A. (Wisconsin).
