Investigators probe death of Oshawa teenager
By Katie ROOK,
Page
A14
Toxicology tests have been ordered after what police descnbe
as the suspicious death of an Oshawa teen.
Kyla HOLBURN, 16, was found face down in a laneway beside a seven
storey apartment building in Whitby just after 6: 30 Monday evening.
Police said a resident of the building found the body and informed
the superintendent, who called 911.
An autopsy performed yesterday found no signs of trauma to Ms.
HOLBURN's body that wouid have caused her death but said that
she was improperly dressed for the weather, a police spokesman
said.
"It's pretty clear it's a homicide or some very serious accident
that probably didn't happen at this location," Durham Regional
Police Chief Kevin
McALPINE told
CFTO News outside Woodfarm Manor
on Nichol Avenue, where Ms.
HOLBURN's body was found.
Forensic investigators cordoned off a home at 323 Durham Court,
less than two kilometres from where the body was found.
Police are treating the death as suspicious, and the residence
is a place of interest, said Staff Sergeant Paul
MARTIN of Durham
Regional Police.
Students at R. S. McLaughlin Collegiate and Vocational Institute
in Oshawa, where Ms.
HOLBURN was in Grade 11, were told in an
announcement that she died suddenly and counsellors were available
at the school.
Ms. HOLBURN's
Friends soon arrived at the Nichol Avenue apartment
building with flowers in hand to pay their respects. They described
her as caring and outgoing, and said they were surprised to hear
she was in Whitby.
Sergeant Paul
McCURBIN of Durham police said that when any young
person dies it "is obviously a concern. You haven't even started
your life yet."
The major-crimes unit in Durham Region continues to investigate
and police ask that anyone with information contact them.

Youth killed hitching ride on car
Teen horsing around' on rollerblades
Dies in the arms of his older brother
By Stan JOSEY,
Staff
Reporter
A Pickering youth died in his brother's arms after being run
over by a car he had been hitching a ride on while rollerblading.
Derek CAMERON, 15, was "horsing around" on the street outside
his family home on Rawlings Dr. about 4: 30 p.m. Wednesday when
the accident happened, police said. Derek's father, Scott
CAMERON,
learned about his son's death while on holiday in Myrtle Beach
and rushed home to be with his family last night.
He said his son was an avid hockey player since the age of 6
and wore number 17 on a Pickering house league minor midget team.
"He was a terrific kid and an excellent hockey player," his father
said in an interview. "He was full of energy and lived on the
edge."
His 17-year-old brother Danny helped set up a memorial to his
brother on a street-side hydro transformer outside the family
home yesterday.
Derek's blue, white and red hockey jersey was draped over the
front of the green box, with several pictures of the boy growing
up and in his hockey jersey lovingly placed on top.
In front were some flowers and the words "Love Mom Dad and Danny."
Family friend Shelagh
NICHOLS called Derek "a wonderful kid who
grew up with one of my sons. We lived just across the back fence.
He was just a very athletic kid who loved his brother and people
in general.
"He was a real firecracker," she said.
Durham Region police said they are still trying to fit the pieces
together to find out exactly what happened on the quiet residential
street in the Kingston Rd. and Dixie Rd. area of Pickering. Investigators
will say only that the youth was wearing rollerblades while he
was hitching a ride from a 1997 Dodge Neon being driven by a
20-year-old woman whom he knew. It is not clear if the youth
was beside or behind the vehicle, Sgt. Paul
McCURBIN said.
Somehow he fell under the wheels of the car and suffered severe
head injuries. He was comforted by his brother, Friends and neighbours
until an ambulance arrived. He was transported to Rouge Valley
Ajax and Pickering hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"It is no fun having your brother die in your arms," an emotional
Danny CAMERON said outside his house, as he was comforted by
Friends.
Family and Friends are planning a memorial service for Derek
today.

Pilot dies at Oshawa air show
Close friend was flying nearby before ultralight plane crashed
By Scott SIMMIE and Naomi
CARNIOL,
Staff
Reporters
A highly experienced pilot -- and a well-liked man in the aviation
community -- died in a crash yesterday at the Canadian Aviation
Expo in Oshawa, the country's largest aviation show.
Doug ROGERSON was in the cockpit of his beloved SeaRey, a plane
that had brought him endless joy since he purchased it in October
2002. The Air Canada pilot, who lived near Shelburne, was 58.
"I'm just devastated," said his close friend and fellow SeaRey
owner, John
DUNLOP. "
Doug has been my friend and my buddy for
15 years. He's lived flying like I have and we shared our dream
together. And it's ended in such a tragedy today."
The accident occurred at about 1: 40 p.m., as
ROGERSON and
DUNLOP
were preparing for a fly-by at the air show.
DUNLOP, a retired
Air Canada pilot who has logged hundreds of flights with his
own SeaRey, had no indication anything was amiss.
"He was flying on my wing when it happened. I wasn't even aware
that he'd left my side until I learned of the accident,"
DUNLOP
said last night while heading back to Shelburne to see
ROGERSON's
widow and children.
"My family is with me and they're devastated, too."
Few details about the cause of the accident were available yesterday.
witnesses: said the two ultralights took off together and were
heading west when
ROGERSON's aircraft appeared to have trouble.
It banked to the left, then the right, before going nose-down
into a large pile of gravel next to the foundation of a housing
complex.
A crowd quickly gathered.
"I had my hands on that plane two hours before it crashed," said
Sandra FREER of Whitby. "The plane was on the tarmac and you
could go look at it."
At this early stage of the investigation, police had little information
they were able to share.
"Witnesses: reported the plane narrowly missed some homes in the
area as it went down and came to rest on the dugout area of the
home under construction," said Sgt. Paul
McCURBIN of Durham Region
police.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call investigators
from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada at 905-771-7690.
Organizers of the Canadian Aviation Expo could not be reached
for comment.
Just two days earlier,
ROGERSON spoke with the Toronto Star about
his love for the aircraft, known by many as "The Orca Rey" because
it was painted like a killer whale. He purchased the ultralight,
which many build as a kit, as a used aircraft in Seattle.
With an infectious, friendly smile, he described the wonders
the plane had brought him, especially on a trip earlier this
year with DUNLOP and
ROGERSON's son, who is also a pilot.
"We were down in Florida this spring. We flew right down the
coast of Florida at 50 to 100 feet up," he said. "We saw wild
pigs, even wild horses in northern Florida. My son is also a
pilot... so it was kind of fun flying with him."
As a career pilot,
ROGERSON was a stickler for details and safety.
His craft was gleaming and the cockpit spotless. A pre-flight
checklist, which he went over every time he took the aircraft
up, was mounted on the instrument panel.
Though ultralight aircraft have grown safer over the years --
and the SeaRey has an excellent reputation and a wide following
accidents still happen. A scan of Transport Canada's accident
reports indicates that most ultralight crashes occur when the
pilot is either not licensed to fly, has modified the aircraft,
or is attempting manoeuvres for which the craft was not designed.
Given ROGERSON's background and reputation, it would be surprising
if the investigation determines that pilot error was a factor.
On calm summer evenings,
ROGERSON was particularly fond of taking
his 80-horsepower SeaRey to Bellwood Lake. He was also looking
forward to an annual "gaggle" of SeaRey enthusiasts that gathers
each year on Georgian Bay. If that gathering goes ahead this
summer, you can bet there will be some wonderful stories about
ROGERSON -- and more than a few tears.
"Doug was a genuine guy and the best friend a guy could ever
have," said
DUNLOP, who distributes SeaRey kits in Canada.
You can find pictures of Doug
ROGERSON, flying his distinctive
and well-travelled Orca Rey, on the photo gallery at http: //www.seareycanada.com.

Methanol mistake leaves man dead
By Jordan PRESS,
Tuesday,
March 1, 2005 - Page A12
Oshawa -- An Oshawa man who died Sunday of methanol poisoning
thought he had been drinking homemade alcohol he had gotten from
Friends, his mother said yesterday.
A vodka bottle filled with methanol was passed to Jeff
HUSTINS,
24, through a series of Friends, Deborah
HUSTINS said in a telephone
phone interview.
The friend who gave the bottle to Mr.
HUSTINS thought it contained
homemade alcohol. It was not clear where the mix-up occurred.
When police recovered the bottle, there was still methanol in
it, Ms. HUSTINS said.
"It tasted like alcohol, it smelled like alcohol.... That's what
everyone assumed it was."
Methanol -- also known as methyl alcohol -- is clear, colourless
and has a slight odour. It is an ingredient in products such
as antifreeze, glass cleaner, paints and varnishes. Methyl hydrate,
a more potent version of methyl alcohol, is sold in hardware
stores.
Mr. HUSTINS drank the methanol for three straight nights, his
mother said. On the third night -- Thursday -- he went to a house
party where he had no more than one glass of the methanol, she
said.
The party was at the apartment of Rich
DESROCHES and started
after 11 p.m. Mr.
HUSTINS,
Mr.
DESROCHES, 36, and another friend,
Dave GOODCHILD, 33, each had the methyl alcohol mixed with orange
juice, Mr.
DESROCHES said.
"Nobody knew it was methanol," said another man at the party,
Kim WRIGHT, 38.
Ms. HUSTINS said she checked on her son Saturday morning and
he looked hung over. When she heard that Mr.
DESROCHES had similar
symptoms, she called an ambulance.
Once at the hospital, Mr.
HUSTINS, who had epilepsy, began having
seizures. He fell into a coma Saturday night and died Sunday
morning.
"I'm hanging in; I'm still in shock, but the full thing hasn't
hit me yet," his mother said. "This was my only child."
Mr. DESROCHES and Mr.
GOODCHILD also went to hospital but recovered.
Durham
Police
Sergeant Paul
McCURDIN said the death was accidental
and police were not planning to lay charges.
Mr. HUSTINS had just moved into an apartment on Normandy Street,
near his mother. Yesterday, residents were signing sympathy cards
for Ms. HUSTINS.
Mr. HUSTINS's funeral is scheduled for Friday.
