Popular horse rider dies after fall
'You couldn't meet a nicer person' said friend Karen
FOSTER
'She never had anything bad to say about anything'
By Jim ALGIE, Sun Times Staff, and Don
CROSBY, Sun Times Correspondent,
Page A1
Patricia MOORE died doing what she loved.
"She loved her horses more than anything except her grandchildren,"
said a woman who works in the Holstein General store.
A well-known Mount Forest-area rider,
MOORE, 45, died after a
fall from her
horse during during barrel race practice at A-Bar-K Rodeo farm
near Holstein early Wednesday evening.
MOORE had two grandchildren, one-year-old Breanna and five-year-old
Alex. She and her husband Don took the grandchildren to Disney
last winter. The couple were accomplished riders who competed
at events in Canada and the U.S.
Last
February the
MOOREs held a fundraiser for Pat's father,
Andy McROBBIE, to help raise money for a new house. His house
was destroyed by fire.
"You couldn't meet a nicer person. She never had anything bad
to say about anything, never heard her complain about work...
a happy go lucky person," said friend Karen
FOSTER. "It makes
you wonder how life is fair."
MOORE had completed a practice run on a ranch partly owned by
FOSTER.
The horse she was riding failed to stop as expected, witnesses:
told police. The animal, which belonged to
MOORE, ran onto a
small concrete slab where it lost its footing and fell, Grey
County Ontario Provincial Police spokesman Senior Const. Steve
STARR said in an interview.
In the fall,
MOORE struck her head on the concrete. She suffered
what STARR described as a serious head injury.
MOORE had been part of a group which met regularly at the farm
to practise competitive rodeo manoeuvres.
Other participants provided first-aid to the injured rider until
paramedics, including an advanced life support unit from Palmerston,
arrived.
Air ambulance took
MOORE directly to Hamilton General Hospital
at about 8: 20 p.m. She was pronounced dead shortly after midnight
at the hospital.
The barrel race requires horse and rider to complete a timed
dash, weaving among a series of empty barrels placed in a consistent
pattern.
MOORE was not wearing protective headgear at the time of her
fall, STARR said.
"We're just kind of in limbo here," said
FOSTER, her voice cracking
with emotion as she walked from the scene of the accident to
the house where people who had been with
MOORE the night before
were grieving.

Leo was born and
raised in Gimli, Manitoba and left to pursue higher education
in Winnipeg where he met and married Jean in 1957. They settled
in Saskatoon where they raised their four children. Leo always
believed and was quick to point out to others that his accomplishments,
personally and professionally, were the result of their partnership.
He valued Jean's love and support above all else. Leo was proud
of his family and regularly shared that with his children. Leo
received his elementary and secondary education in Gimli where
through the encouragement of family and teachers he developed
a lifelong interest in learning. He continued his education by
obtaining his B.A. at United College in Winnipeg, and his M.A.
in History from the University of Manitoba, and his Ph.D. in
economics and history from the University of Wisconsin. Leo began
his professional career in Saskatoon in 1959 as a researcher,
professor and later administrator at the University of Saskatchewan.
He retired in 1989 after 9 years as President of the University
of Saskatchewan. Leo played a major role in the establishment
of a new Agricultural Science Complex, the Institute for the
Prevention of Handicaps, the Centre for Agricultural Medicine,
the Meewasin Valley Authority and many other initiatives both
within the university and with partnerships between the university
and other parts of the community. Upon retirement, he returned
to his childhood home in Gimli. Leo involved himself in contributing
to his community. Through carpentry, fundraising, bringing ideas
to fruition and other forms of leadership he found a role for
himself in the community. He was happiest when he was immersed
in a project. He received many honours over the years including:
Member of the Order of Canada, an honourary Doctor of Laws from
the University of Winnipeg, the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal of
the Institute of Public Administration, the Saskatchewan Cooperative
Order of Merit, and membership in the Saskatchewan Agriculture
Hall of Fame. Since returning to Manitoba he received many awards
and recognitions for volunteerism and heritage. He will always
be remembered for the twinkle in his eye, a story for young or
old, a strong sense of ethics, boundless patience and optimism.
A special thanks to Dr Hobson and his staff for their caring
Friendship and ensuring that Leo could fulfill his potential.
Thanks also to Dr Rajput of Saskatoon and the Gimli medical staff
for their great care. In lieu of flowers donations to the Parkinson's
Society, 302-171 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 1M4 or
another charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.
A celebration of Leo's life will be held at the Gimli Park Pavilion
