Rosanne O'HEARN
By Nicholas
PASHLEY,
Wednesday,
January 12, 2005 - Page A16
Wit, reader, activist, volunteer, Scrabble shark, backseat driver.
Born September 22, 1930, in Peterborough, Ontario Died November
20, 2004, in Toronto, of complications from lung cancer, aged
A diagnosis of inoperable cancer casts most people into a funk.
Not Rosanne
O'HEARN: too much to do. She told her son, "Oh sure,
some days when I think about dying I get upset, but I'm too busy
to worry about it."
In the end, Rosanne had nearly three years (considerably longer
than expected) after that diagnosis -- time to read books, volunteer
at the Textile Museum of Canada, see her many Friends, play Scrabble,
help get her friend Paula Fletcher elected a city councillor
in Toronto.
Time also to plan her memorial service. Nothing startling, perhaps,
about her choice of Brahms and Dvorak -- but Cole Porter? Miss
Otis Regrets? A standing-room-only gathering nodded and smiled:
Rosanne was still getting a rise out of us.
Rosanne died as she lived: surrounded by good books. She had
been part of the same book group, with the same members meeting
monthly, for nearly 50 years. Logan Pearsall Smith wrote, "People
say life's the thing, but I prefer reading." This was not Rosanne's
philosophy. Life was indeed the thing, and reading was an excellent
way of getting at it. Rosanne loved much about life -- the arts,
travel, eating well -- but mostly she loved people. (Which is
not to say that she always liked people.) She had many Friendships
that lasted for decades, yet she kept finding new Friends wherever
she went. On average, her Friendships endured longer than either
of her marriages. (She once said, "I had two husbands, but they
wouldn't do as they were told. They're both dead.")
When she wasn't with people, Rosanne was at home reading. About
people. (Not surprisingly, both her husbands were writers.) Particularly
after she retired, her book needs were such that she conducted
regular business with four different branches of the Toronto
Public Library. When the authorities tried to close down the
City Hall branch, Rosanne was a leader in the fight to save it.
She won, of course. She usually did. Her charm and wit masked
a tough, challenging woman. When she decided to quit drinking,
she quit. Then she quit smoking, though not soon enough. Cancer
finally beat her, but not by much. It never robbed her of her
dignity or her sense of humour. During a spell of chemotherapy
she joked that she didn't mind going out in the rain: "I've got
a naturally curly wig." Rosanne died painlessly and peacefully,
at home in her own bed, in the company of books and family members.
She hated being bored. An account of a dull event might include
the mysterious acronym
MEGO: My
Eyes
Glaze
Over. She hoped other
people would prove as clever and witty as she, but that was asking
a lot.
Rosanne had strong views on most subjects, including the best
and most interesting -- routes for negotiating the streets
of Toronto, as well as the highways and back roads of Ontario.
An enthusiastic motorist herself, she was a formidable backseat
driver. She often quipped, "I've got my backseat driver's licence,"
usually forestalling nasty comments from beleaguered taxi drivers.
Rosanne's enthusiasm for people may have influenced her to create
five new ones of her own: Anne
PASHLEY,
Susan,
Thad, and Marta
McILROY, and Sara
O'HEARN.
She took great pride in her children,
although her approach to motherhood was not always conventional.
Largely self-educated, she wanted her children to be well read,
articulate, and witty in conversation. She succeeded. They are
a disparate group of people, not very like their mother, but
just as smart, interesting, and complicated. They are Rosanne's
impressive legacy.
Nicholas PASHLEY is Rosanne's son-in-law.
