He was Mr. Sauble Beach
Community mourns Dan
KIRKLAND, a tireless fundraiser and its
unofficial mayor
By Bill HENRY,

Staff,
Page A1
Sauble Beach has lost a tireless charity fundraiser and community
booster.
Dan KIRKLAND, 51, was South Bruce Peninsula's Volunteer of The
Year last year. He died suddenly at his home on Main Street Wednesday
morning.
Mr. KIRKLAND was seen almost daily riding his bicycle around
town, shoveling snow and cutting lawns for seniors, or selling
raffle tickets downtown for a long list of charities. He was
known unofficially as the mayor of Sauble Beach, his friend Mark
WUNDERLICH said Thursday.
"He's just one of the fixtures, one of the main characters that
made Sauble Beach Sauble Beach. There's no other way to put it,"
WUNDERLICH said.
Mr. KIRKLAND was raised in Kitchener and came to Sauble as a
young man, living since then in the family cottage not far from
the community's landmark water slide, his cousin Jay
KIRKLAND
said.
He would have been in
KIRKLAND's
Sauble grocery store this week
selling crocuses for charity, where the store has set up a display
to continue the charity sales in his honour. His cousin's goal
was to eventually raise $100,000 for various charities and had
passed the $80,000 mark,
KIRKLAND said.
"He was here at least two to three days a week selling tickets
for whatever organization was raising funds at the time. He's
done an awful lot,"
KIRKLAND said. "He's going to be missed."
Mr. KIRKLAND would often sell his raffle tickets at a local bank
or at a prominent spot on the beach. He attended council sessions,
helped at pancake breakfasts and worked the gates at ball tournaments
and other sporting events.
"Any events that were going on, Dan was there somewhere. He just
took a real old-fashioned interest in the betterment of his community,"
said WUNDERLICH, who worked with his friend at numerous chamber
of commerce and community functions.
"He was an incredible conscientious' worker. He took his time
but the job was done the way it was supposed to be done,"
WUNDERLICH
said.
"Everybody at Sauble Beach loved Dan and respected Dan. He was
one of the main fixtures at Sauble Beach and Sauble Beach right
now is flying at half mast. He was a good friend of mine and
he was a great guy and an asset to the community and we have
truly lost one of our own."
Mr. KIRKLAND's
Friends may call at the Downs and son Funeral
Home in Hepworth today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral
will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from Zion Amabel United Church
in Sauble Beach.
