WIMAN,
Erastus, 1904
Wednesday, February 9, 2005 - Page S9
Journalist and businessman born at Churchville, Upper Canada,
on April 21, 1834. After cutting his teeth as a business reporter
for The Globe in Toronto, he launched his own market and trade
reviews and then became a reporter for R.G.
DUN's
Mercantile
Agency. In 1866, he moved to New York to manage Dun's office
there and, through articles and speaking tours, became an avowed
supporter of commercial union with the United States. He came
undone when large investments he had made in the development
of Staten Island, New York turned bad and he was found to have
used Dun's agency money for his own purposes. He died on Staten
Island.
