CRAIG,
Sir
James
Henry 1812 -- Died This Day
Wednesday, January 12, 2005 - Page S7
Colonial administrator born in 1748 at Gibraltar; died on Jan
12, 1812, at London, England). In 1807, he was made Governor-General
of the Canadas, a job he held until late 1811. During that time,
he and Friends he had made from among prominent English merchants
attempted to stamp out all sign of French-Canadian nationalism.
He meddled with elections, seized newspaper presses, imprisoned
editors and, in 1810, threw into jail (without fair trial) as
many leaders of the Parti Canadien of Lower Canada as he could
arrest. Ordered by London to accept the will of the legislature,
he instead shut the place down and ordered new elections. A military
man, he sensed war with the United States was imminent and is
credited with readying the militia and preparing defences. He
died in London.
