Peacefully, on October 26, 2005, Jim Sloan entered his eternal
rest from St. Michael's Hospital at the age of 90. The man who
touched many lives through his ministry will be missed by all
with whom he came in contact for his gentle touch and wonderful,
positive outlook on life. He was predeceased by Grace, his wife
of 51 years, who passed away in 1995. He will be lovingly remembered
by his son Ron and wife Jeannie, his son Ken and wife Rosemary,
and grandchildren Kendra

Jim▼ was born near Tottenham Ontario and spent
his youth on the family farm. In his late teens, he moved to
Toronto and for a brief time worked at the T Eaton Company. However,
at the age of 19 he found his calling and entered the Salvation
Army Training College for Officers. A year later he began what
would turn out to be 45 years of service with the Salvation Army.
For the first 8 years he was a single officer, until in 1943
he married the former Grace
TUTTE and they continued serving
together for 37 years. Jim and Grace held many church appointments
as well as spending time in public relations, youth work, and
leadership roles throughout Canada. In the latter part of their
career, they were appointed to lead the Army's work in Singapore
and Malaysia. Jim was Personnel Secretary for the Salvation Army
in Canada at the time of his retirement in 1980. He spent many
years during his retirement as the Visiting Pastor for the North
Toronto Salvation Ar my Corps ministering to the sick and shut
in. Friends may visit at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 6191 Yonge
Street, North York (just south of Steeles Avenue) from 7-9 p.m.
on Friday and from 10 a.m. on Saturday. Funeral Service will
be held in the chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will
be at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. If desired, donations may be

Born in rural Saskatchewan, he was challenged early by polio,
later by Alzheimers. Undaunted, he pursued his education (B.Sc.,
Mount Allison University; B.D., Pine Hill Divinity College; M.Th.,
University of Toronto; Honorary Doctor of Divinity, Huron College
of the Anglican Church). He served God and others in a life of
selfless devotion as a United Church Minister (pastorates in
the Nashawaak, Stanley, Minto, New Brunswick; New Glasgow, Nova
Scotia), as General Secretary of the Student Christian Movement
of Canada, Associate Secretary of the Board of Colleges of the
United Church of Canada and President of Maritime Conference.
He worked with the Moravian Church in Jamaica, and ran in a Federal
By-election, representing the New Democratic Party in 1983.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edna
