I Remember -- Norman
LEVINE
By Jane TUDOR,
Monday,
June 20, 2005, Page S8
Ottawa -- Norman
LEVINE's obituary appeared on June 16.
In the summer of 1971, I arrived from swingin' London as a fresh,
raw immigrant offering my talents to a country that I knew little
of except as a Commonwealth partner. My search for work in Ottawa
was not too successful, but the sun shone and I could always
go "home." I invaded the now lost Carnegie Public Library for
something to read as I lay on the lawns of Parliament Hill, and
there I found Norman
LEVINE. I read everything I could find from
this author with the ability to introduce me to the foibles and
nuances of my chosen residence. The city of Ottawa came alive
Murphy Gamble's store, Murray's coffee shops, the streets
of Lowertown -- so very different from my own experiences, but
teeming with observations that I found absorbing, stimulating,
and challenging.
Mr. LEVINE's writings provided me with a reference point for
learning more, and they continue to provide me with challenge
as I reflect upon the "agony and the ecstasy" that is Canada.
