TOPLEY,
Enid
Mary (née
TAILOR/TAYLOR)
Mrs.
Enid
Mary
TOPLEY passed away very peacefully in her ninety-second
year at the Beverly Centre in Calgary on Friday, April 22, 2005
with her daughter Marilyn at her side. She chose to leave us
on the very same day as her beloved husband of fiftyseven years
Herb did, seven years earlier, even within the same hour. Enid
is survived and will be deeply missed by her daughter Carol
JARVIS
(George) of Nanoose Bay, British Columbia; son Steve
TOPLEY
(Debra)
of Tsawwassen, British Columbia; daughter Marilyn
COSTA
(Renzo)
of Calgary; as well as her dear grandchildren, Drew
JARVIS
(Sara,)
Andrea JARVIS
(Nimi

TOPLEY and greatgrandchildren
Jordan and Rafael, all of Vancouver. Born in Leduc, Alberta on
November 19, 1913, Enid lived a long, full life in Calgary. In
her formative years, she traveled extensively with her family
on their famous road trips throughout North America. Her father,
G.L. TAILOR/TAYLOR, founder of Taylor Signs, being an accomplished artist
was capturing the magnificent landscapes as they set about exploring
new horizons. These trips nurtured her lifelong interest in nature,
camping, hiking and outdoor pursuits. This introduction to both
art and travel continued throughout her whole life. Sports played
a prominent part in her life with swimming, skating, golfing
and ultimately speed skating, winning two provincial championships
in that sport. As an adult, curling became the new undertaking
and she enjoyed many years playing at the Glencoe Club in the
ladies and the mixed leagues. When she decided to hang up the
'broom', she participated for many years on the administrative
side of curling starting at the Glencoe and working her way up
to various positions travelling around Alberta and the country
in the capacity of chairperson of both the Alberta Senior Ladies
Curling Association and Southern Alberta Ladies Curling Association.
Enid had a modest nature and yet was very independent, a woman
ahead of her time. She was an astute businesswoman in real estate
and property management. To Enid, her family was everything and
her primary focus. Her children were her pride and joy and this
was extended when grandchildren arrived. In her later years,
the biggest thrill of all was becoming a great-grandmother to
Jordan and Rafael. Friends and relatives are welcome to join
the family in a celebration of Enid's life at a reception at
the Glencoe Club (636 - 29th Avenue S.W., Calgary) on Saturday,
April 30, 2005 at 2: 00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
made directly to the Canadian National Institute of the Blind
(15 Colonel Baker Place Nebraska, Calgary, Alberta T2E 4Z3) would
be appreciated by the family. To email condolences leydens@arbor

I Remember - Leo
LABINE
Ron WICKS, a former National Hockey League referee, writes about
Leo LABINE, whose obituary appeared on March 1.
By Ron WICKS,
Monday,
March 14, 2005 Page S9
I first met Leo
LABINE in October of 1960, when I was a rookie
linesman fresh out of the Sudbury Midget Hockey League. I was
a buddy of Leo's teammate, Gerry
TOPPAZZINI, so I had some credibility
with the players. Leo was a great guy who had a lovely habit
of irritating the star players on the opposing teams, and cause
them to forget about scoring goals and, instead, would run around
the ice trying to catch him. Rocket Richard was a favourite target.
As you can imagine, there was no love lost. Back in the era of
train travel, Boston would play in Montreal on a Saturday night,
then both teams would travel to Westmount station and board the
same train and go overnight to Boston to play round 4 the next
night. Each team had their own sleeper car, but had to have breakfast
together. Some mornings, I expected the fisticuffs to begin at
8 a.m., not 8 p.m. Some grudges never were resolved. About 10
years ago, Rocket Richard was refereeing an National Hockey League
old-timers game in North Bay when Leo walked into the room and
said, "Hi Rocket, how are you?" Maurice never looked up. "Fuck
off," he mumbled and Leo kept right on going. Gilles Marotte
told me he damn near fell over laughing.

Anchors a-weigh and wind-filled sail
We give you back the sea again
In sailor's songs and rousing tale
And inland where the dark hills rise
Between you and the salt-thick foam
You hear the surf, the sea-gulls' cries
And eastward turn your heart towards home.
After cremation, Arthur's ashes will be returned to Nova Scotia
