I Remember -- Tom
SLOAN
By George TODD,
Wednesday,
June 22, 2005, Page S9
George TODD of Guelph, Ontario, writes about Tom
SLOAN, whose
obituary appeared on June 9.
Tom and I lived together when we were reporters at the Welland
Tribune; he covered the county beat, and I did the city -- two
guys with M. As in philosophy and a finger on the political pulse.
We got to know each other well. Tom was cantankerous, rebellious
and iconoclastic. As it happened, he was assigned to cover a
royal visitor to Niagara Falls. I believe it was Princess Anne.
The
Trib's managing editor, Tommy
MORRISON, was a fine newspaperman
with otherwise good judgment. This, however, was a mistake.
Tom, a hard-line republican, was fit to be tied. He stormed around
our crummy flat above a service station, cursing royalty roundly,
before dutifully setting out. Late that Sunday afternoon, I received
a worried call from a junior editor. Tom was long overdue. Knowing
Tom, I set off for the Falls to find him. As I was coming into
Lundy's Lane, I detected a tiny speck in the distance, dancing
haphazardly beside the road. It was Tom, staggering along, drunk
as the Lord.
I stopped to get him into the car. He was having none of it.
He was bloody well walking to Welland and bloody well going to
write his story. I persevered, and he did come around but, nonetheless,
cursed me all the way home. I took no offence. Only those Tom
really cared for got cursed in that fashion. I took him home
and put him to bed. But I didn't leave him there to sleep it
off. After a few hours, I got him up and delivered him to the
office. The story came out. To the unknowing eye, it was a straight
account. But the knowing eye could detect the innuendo dripping
from every sentence.
We got together often after he moved to The Globe, usually winding
up in some kind of hellery. Tom was best man at my wedding but,
after he moved east, we saw less of each other and eventually
lost contact.
