TILSTON,
Frederick, 1992 -- Died This Day
Saturday, September 24, 2005, Page S9
Soldier and executive born in Toronto on June 11, 1906.
Educated at De La Salle High School in Toronto, he attended the
Ontario College of Pharmacy and the University of Toronto before
joining a large drug-manufacturing company. Soon after the outbreak
of the Second World War, he enlisted in the army and, being older
than most recruits, was promoted to sergeant. He later won a
commission and was sent overseas. On March 1, 1945, he was serving
as an Acting Major in The Essex Scottish Regiment, when his unit
encountered heavy enemy resistance in the Hochwald Forest in
Germany. Although wounded in the head, he led his company in
an attack, crossed a belt of wire three metres deep and assaulted
a line of enemy trenches. He personally snuffed out a machine-gun
nest and was the first to reach the enemy position. Pressing
on to the second line, he was severely wounded in the hip. He
was wounded a third time but refused medical attention until
he had provided instructions for holding the position. He later
suffered a double amputation. He was awarded the Victoria Cross.
After the war, he returned to his old company, where he rose
to become chairman.
