Dad, 23, electrocuted
Flagpole mishap costs Adam
DOW his life and leaves wife
Kelly
to raise their twin baby sons.
By Melinda
DALTON,
Free
Press
Reporter
With nine-week-old twin boys, a new house in Lucan for his young
family and a new job working with his father at Battlefield Rentals
in London, 23-year-old Adam
DOW seemed to have everything going
for him.
That was before the afternoon of August 5 when, while putting
up a flagpole in his yard,
DOW hit a power line.
From that brief moment, his life would be measured in days instead
of decades.
And his family would be left struggling to cope with the freak
accident that, Sunday, in a London hospital, nine days later,
took the promising young man's life.
DOW grew up in Lucan and met his future wife, Kelly
SENTON, in
Grade 2.
"They started dating in Grade 10,"
DOW's father, Stuart
DOW recalled.
"They've been soulmates ever since."
Brandt and Brody, their identical twins, joined the budding family
this year, born a few weeks early on June 2.
A textbook handyman,
DOW spent the days before the births finishing
the nursery in the home the couple bought to have more room for
the boys to grow.
"He was a very proud young father," said Carlton
NIXEY, service
manager at Battlefield Rentals.
DOW started working as a parts clerk at the company a little
more than a year ago.
"He was still learning the business, but he really caught on
fast," NIXEY said.
DOW's father said his son always had been mechanically inclined
and a hard worker.
When Adam was nine, he wrote a job resume and rode his bike up
and down the road in Lucan, placing one in each mailbox.
"One of the farmers hired him on," his father said.
"He's always been ambitious. He paid cash for his own car when
he was 15, before he could drive."
DOW was characteristically busy again August 5, erecting a flagpole
on his front lawn.
He'd fashioned the pole himself from an old pipe, attaching a
pulley to hoist the flag.
"It was for a Canadian flag. He wanted to show his patriotism,"
Stuart DOW said.
Noticing the power lines not far from where he'd laid the concrete
support for the pole,
DOW warned his wife to mind the wires.
Seconds after the words left his mouth, wind pushed the pole
Adam was hoisting into the power line.
His wife tried to pull him from the metal pipe several times.
"Every time she grabbed his shirt, she got electricity running
through her," Stuart
DOW said.
"She did manage to pull him off. If she hadn't, it would have
been much worse."
Kelly DOW, on maternity leave from Scotiabank in Stratford, suffered
minor burns to her hands.
Adam's injuries were far more serious.
The current that ran through his body had such a profound effect
that both of his arms had to be amputated.
Despite his injuries,
DOW's parents and wife remained optimistic
he'd pull through.
During the week-long ordeal, many family members slept at the
hospital, leaving only to look after the babies.
The twins, tended by relatives while their mother kept vigil
at Adam's bedside, will never get to know their proud and ambitious
father.
After enduring more than six days of operations to restore damage
caused by the shock, Adam
DOW died in the critical care unit
at London's Victoria Hospital Sunday.
While arrangements are still being made to honour
DOW's life,
Kelly's aunt has set up a trust fund to help the young widow
and her now 11-week old boys.
Anyone who'd like to contribute to the trust can donate at any
TD Canada Trust branch to account number 2940 6216389.
