Sport utility vehicle driver shot in Woodbridge
By Morgan CAMPBELL,
Staff
Reporter
A man found shot to death in a car outside a Woodbridge optometrist's
office Wednesday night has been identified as 58-year-old Vincenzo
RACO of Brampton.
RACO was in the driver's seat of a Ford Freestyle sport utility
vehicle at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, stopped in the parking lot
of a medical professionals' building on Islington Ave., just
north of Highway 7.
According to police, witnesses: saw a man approach
RACO's car
just before hearing gunshots.
The man then ran through the parking lot to a waiting car, a
small dark Honda or Acura, which then sped north on Islington,
said Det. Sgt. Bill
SADLER of the York Region police.
Police wouldn't say whether the shooter was inside the car with
RACO, but the car's windows didn't appear to have been damaged.
An autopsy was scheduled for yesterday afternoon.
Police planned to take
RACO's car to their Newmarket headquarters
for more examination.
RACO's slaying is York Region's first homicide of 2005. Although
he lived in Brampton,
RACO was known to York Region police,
SADLER
said, although he wouldn't elaborate.
A woman who answered the door at
RACO's home said the family
would not speak to the media.
Many of the building's businesses were still open when the shooting
occurred.
Yesterday morning at least 15 vehicles still sat in the building's
parking lot, stranded there overnight and sealed in with police
crime scene tape.
Police had also blocked the parking lot of the church next door
to the building.
Most offices in the building were closed yesterday morning. As
patients arrived, building manager Natalie
ERAMO greeted them
and asked them to reschedule their appointments.
She has dropped by the building at least twice a day for the
last five years and has never seen an incident like this one.
"Are you serious? This is a medical building," she said. "I've
had someone slip before, but that's about it."
While ERAMO was speaking, investigators sifted through the snow
for clues, shuffling along Willis Rd., and along the banks of
the nearby East Humber River.
Minutes later Rosie
SATILLE-
MINELLI emerged from behind police
lines. She knew nothing of the shooting until she arrived for
her 8: 30 a.m. shift as a secretary at a physiotherapist's office.
Although the building was closed she said police let her in so
she could phone patients and reschedule appointments.
"I didn't figure (a shooting) would happen here," said
SATILLE-
MINELLI,
pointing out that the office building is just metres away from
an apartment building for seniors. "It's a little too close to
home."
Police are looking for a "person of interest" described as male,
5-foot-11 and clean-shaven. That night he wore a hooded winter
coat and a dark toque.
They would also like to speak with anyone who had contact with
RACO between 7: 15 and 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Police ask anyone with information to call the York Region Homicide
Bureau at 1-866-287-5025 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
