Friends mourn slain teenager
By Scott ROBERTS and Ashley JOANNOU, Staff Reporters
Six roses, a red bandana and a copy of the New Testament lay on a sidewalk behind an Etobicoke apartment complex last night a memorial for 17-year-old Matthew George WILMOT.
A gym beside the apartment where the teen played basketball was used as a canvas for one last message from WILMOT's Friends: "R.I.P. DIzzy."
WILMOT, known to his Friends as DIzzy, was gunned down Wednesday afternoon outside the entrance of an apartment on Islington Ave. just south of Finch Ave. W., at about 2 p.m.
His death was one of three shootings this week; Toronto police have made an arrest in the shooting of a 12-year-old boy and are still searching for suspects in the other attacks.
WILMOT died after being taken to Sunnybrook hospital; an autopsy yesterday revealed the cause to be gunshot wounds to the chest.
The afternoon shooting took place just steps away from a playground where children looked on.
witnesses: reported seeing a black sport utility vehicle, possibly a Lincoln Navigator or a Ford Explorer, speeding away after the shooting. No arrests have been made.
Friends of WILMOT described him as quiet and athletic. They were shocked he would be the target of an attack that police described as brazen.
"He was just a good guy," said Shawn CETTINO, a close friend. "He was a smart kid, too. He would never disrespect anyone."
WILMOT was known to police but officers wouldn't elaborate.
Meanwhhile, Bernard BOACHIE, 18, of Toronto faces eight charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault, in the shooting of a 12-year-old boy on Monday.
Police believe BOACHIE knew the boy.
The victim was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children by cab after being shot in the shoulder in an apartment building on Tobermory Dr., near Jane and Finch Aves.
Two days later, WILMOT became the city's 31st homicide victim of the year.
Police are also appealing for witnesses: to a second shooting Wednesday, just west of Spadina Ave. between Dundas and Queen Sts.
Kortez JACKSON, a father of four, was shot three times when he opened the door to a townhouse in Atkinson Co-op at about 11 a.m. JACKSON, 32, is in critical condition in hospital.
In another case, police arrested a man in Ottawa yesterday, alleging he had broken the conditions of his release from jail.
Bhupinder Singh SAHOTA, 45, was on conditional release from the Toronto East Detention Centre after being charged with possession of stolen credit cards. He is being brought to Toronto by Ottawa police and will face a variety of charges.
