PETERSEN,
Ellen
Margarete (née
RUBACH)
Born in Hamburg, Germany on March 30, 1930 to Willie and Erna
RUBACH,
Ellen immigrated to Canada in 1953 where she met Walter
and partook in the dream to build a life and livelihood together
in a new country. Ellen soon turned her focus to David and Julie
and became a caring and nurturing mother, teaching by example
and sharing the love of nature and all wild things with her children.
She spent summers in Georgian Bay at the family cottage, often
picking wild mushrooms to augment one of her special dishes
afterwards enjoying a northern Ontario sunset and the spectacular
stars that would follow. Winters were spent on Captiva Island,
Florida exploring with the kids, collecting shells or bird watching,
her special hobby. Ellen's love of facilitation and sharing experiences
carried over to teaching later in life, when she earned her English
as a Second Language certification and helped many new Canadians
learn the intricacies of a different language and country. Her
colleagues knew her as a dedicated and compassionate teacher
who would always go that extra distance for her students. Ellen
globe trotted extensively in her later years and put together
a travel resume that a National Geographic photographer would
have been proud to accumulate. Ellen is lovingly remembered by
daughter Julie, son David, grandchildren Rush and Annie, daughter-in-law
Patricia and many dear Friends. The family wishes to thank the
Princess
Margaret
Hospital staff, especially Dr.
STURGEON for
his care and the staff at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital,
with special mention going to the 4E and 3E nursing staff; your
support and understanding made this difficult journey a little
easier. A Celebration of Ellen's life will be held on Thursday,
August 4, from 5-8 pm at Glen Erin Inn, 1695 The Collegeway,
Mississauga (905-828-6103). In lieu of flowers, a donation to
the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation or the Ding Darling
Wildlife Society, 1 Wildlife Dr., Sanibel, Florida, 33957 U.S.A.
would be appreciated.

The bookseller behind Lichtman's
By Sandra MARTIN,

Toronto -- Gerald (Gerry) Martin
RUBY, an independent bookseller
who built the nine-store Lichtman's chain in the Greater Toronto
Area, died of pancreatic cancer on Wednesday. He was 57.
Mr. RUBY, who was born in Toronto on September 26, 1947, was
the son of Julia and the late Morris (Moe)
RUBY.
Lichtman's
News
Agency
Inc. was founded in 1909 by Galician immigrant Sammy
LICHTMAN
as a newsstand on the corner of Queen and Bay Streets. He expanded
and contracted his business over the years. In 1968, Moe
RUBY
bought what was then the only Lichtman's store, at the corner
of Temperance and Bay Streets.
Gerry RUBY acquired it in the early 1970s, and built the chain
into one of the largest merchandisers of domestic and foreign
newspapers and magazines in Canada. Mr.
RUBY went out of business
in March of 2000, partly because of competition from the Chapters
and Indigo line of superstores and Internet booksellers such
as Amazon.com. "This is what it must feel like to be operated
on -- it's painful," he said as he applied for bankruptcy protection.
A former director of the Canadian Booksellers Association, Mr.
RUBY was a benefactor of
PEN
Canada. He is survived by his wife,
Caren, five children and one grandchild.
