Bernice SCOTT (née TEMPLE) beloved wife of the late Howard James SCOTT. Survived by her sisters Mary HERSOM and Elsie RIVA and sisters-in-law Margaret GREER/GRIER and Joyce TIGHE and her 16 Nieces and Nephews. Predeceased by her sisters Jean ADAMSON and Margaret STECKENREITER and her Nephew Gordon STECKENREITER. She will be sadly missed by her many Friends. Beloved wife and best friend of Frank VINK. Predeceased by Clifford MIDDLETON , her loving husband for more than 50 years, her parents Dennis and Mary BILLARD, and sisters Blanche MORPHEW and Marion PURVES. Dearly loved mother of Mary Jane RIVARD and her husband Louis of London, and son John MIDDLETON and his partner Kate STEWARD/STEWART/STUART of Duncan, British Columbia. Swim tragedy claims second child victim
Seven-year-old boy dies in hospital a day after his brother drowned

Fergus -- Already reeling from the drowning of their nine-year-old boy, a Toronto family was faced with a mounting tragedy last night as their seven-year-old son died in a Toronto hospital.
Calvin LE had been in critical care at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto after a swimming accident that killed his brother Larry on Sunday.
The LE family spent the day shuttling between the Hospital for Sick Children and the McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton, where a third son, eight-year-old Anthony, is being treated. Anthony's condition was upgraded to fair from serious yesterday.
The three children were involved in a horrifying incident at a beach in the Belwood Lake Conservation Area near Fergus on Sunday afternoon. The boys were swimming in the shallow water when someone noticed that Anthony was in trouble. He was pulled from the water and bystander Eddie RIVERA began to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The boy's mother was apparently in such shock that she momentarily forgot about her two other sons who had also slipped under the water.
After a frantic 10-minute search, the two boys were pulled from the bottom by Mr. RIVERA of Kitchener, who had just finished reviving Anthony using cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Mr. RIVERA, 28, told the Guelph Mercury that he dove deep into the water and scooped the two boys from the lake bottom, carrying them to the surface.
"It was just cold and dark," he said yesterday. "I knew I was going to run into a face. I guess I was more or less scared."
The boys were swimming at a former quarry site that has been transformed into a bathing area. The designated swimming zone, which is about one metre deep, is roped off with a floating line of white buoys. Beyond that line, the bottom drops off sharply, reaching a depth of five metres in the centre.
There are no lifeguards on duty, nor is there any supervision. Large signs near the beach warn parents that the beach patrol service, which operated until 1996, has been discontinued and that the safety of their children is their responsibility.
Yesterday, the Grand River Conservation Authority, which is responsible for the area, said it would examine safety procedures at all of its beaches in the wake of this incident and another recent drowning near Cambridge, Ontario
Dave SCHULTZ, spokesman for the conservation authority, said the review would likely examine issues such as signage and emergency procedures and might consider the question of staffing.
He said the beach patrol was discontinued partly for financial reasons and partly because it was thought to provide parents with a false sense of security. Members of the beach patrol were not trained lifeguards but watched swimmers.
Mr. SCHULTZ said budget cuts that were accelerated under the government of Mike Harris reduced the conservation authority's funding by several million dollars. A 1996 report to the authority's planning committee recommended cutting the beach patrol service because it was being phased out in other areas of the province and because it would save about $50,000 a year.
At Sick Kids hospital yesterday, more than half a dozen family members, many fighting tears, crowded into a corner of the waiting room of the critical-care unit.
In Hamilton, Le LINH, an uncle from Guelph, was with the boys' parents as they sat at Anthony's bedside.
He said their mother is very upset, but added that he didn't know much more.
"They don't talk too much, so I don't know exactly what happened. I just know they've [the children] been drowned in the water," he said.
He added that he thinks Anthony's condition is improving.
"He's a little bit awake and then they are going to take the tube out," he said. "Once in a while, he is moving and trying to wake up, but he can hear."
At the boys' elementary school, St. Jane Frances Catholic School on Jane Street in North York, principal Maria CIOPPA said the community was shocked and saddened by the news.
Larry's Grade 4 teacher, Maria LA REGINA, said he was a creative child with a mischievous smile. He was so small he would often be confused for a Grade 1 pupil and was known for his funny dances.
Mary Jo DEIGHAN, a spokeswoman for the Catholic School Board, said counselling services will be provided at the school for the next several days.
"This shows how important it is to look after children," Ms. DEIGHAN said. "Never let them out of your sight, not even for a second."

It is with great sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Benzo Rodin Reategui INGA at 3: 50 p.m., at Punchana Regional Hospital in Iquitos, Peru, after a brief illness with pneumonia and a long battle with stomach ulcers. Benzo was in his 90th year. Benzo was born in Yurimaguas, Peru, and a beloved son of Francisco Reategui HIDALGO (predeceased) and Micaela Inga RIVERA (predeceased 1971.) Benzo had one younger brother, Victor Del Castillo INGA (predeceased 1974.) Benzo was the beloved husband of a caring and devoted wife Rosa Noemi Ruiz PENA for 66 years. He loved all of his extended family, however he refused to travel because Benzo believed that "if men were meant to fly, we would have been born with wings." He was laid to rest on January 20, 2005 at 5: 00 p.m. at the San Miguel Arcangel Cemetery in Iquitos, Peru. Benzo: We pray and know that you are now safely in the care of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ethel had resided in Calgary with her husband Paul for many years before moving to Ingersoll, Ontario, to be near her sister Edna. Ethel and her husband Paul served proudly in our Canadian Forces being stationed in many cities throughout Canada and Europe. Ethel was amazing at remembering all of her families birthdates and dates of their special occassions. She was also an avid supporter of the Muscular Dystropy and Diabetes Associations, as well as many other charities. David was president of Carton Trade Services for 20 years, and a respected business leader in the paper box industry. In his youth, he was a fierce defenseman for the Junior A Barrie Flyers. He continued to play hockey for many years afterward, enjoying the camaraderie of his teammates in old-timers' hockey leagues. He was a man of great strength, pride and generosity. He was happiest sharing a laugh with his family and Friends, especially when playing jokes on them. His sense of humour had become legendary in his neighbourhood.
Although David had wished to be floated down the Don River in a cardboard box wrapped in blazing Christmas lights, instead the family has arranged for visitation at Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave. East, Agincourt, (416) 293-5211 on Monday from 7-9 and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held in the Ogden Chapel on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

With grace and dignity on June 20, 2005, Vi joined her beloved husband Jimmy. Loving mother to Anne (Roger RIVET,) Debbie (Brian HANCOCK,) and Jan (David HENRY.) She is survived by her younger sister Elsie (Stanley TRUSCOTT) and sister-in-law Mary KEHLER. Violet will be lovingly remembered by her six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Her sweet smile and pleasant manner will be missed by all who knew her. The family offers its deepest appreciation to the staff at Shepherd Lodge for their care and kindness. Suddenly, on Monday, September 26th, 2005 at the Humber River Regional Hospital - Finch Avenue Site in her 46th year. Beloved and devoted wife of John for over 17 years. Loving sister of Rachel (Elliot Lake), Dan and his wife Carmelle (Orleans), Luc (Elliot Lake), Micheline (Sudbury) and sister-in-law of Dennis, and Keith and his wife Elaine. Predeceased by her parents Rene and Claire RIVET, father-in-law Gerald PIDGEON and brother-in-law Gary (Gail). ROBERTSON, George Elmer
Died, December 26, 2004, George Elmer ROBERTSON, age 77, former long time resident of Colborne Township. George was predeceased by his wife Lenore Ruth HOY, in 1991, and wife Bette Jean STOSKOPF in 1999. He is survived by three daughters; Ruth Anne STRICKLER, of Woodstock, Bethany Jane JOBB, of London and Martha Lynn ROBERTSON, of Toronto, and two sons; Stephen Elkin and John Edward, both of Goderich. Also, four grandchildren; Kathryn and Drew STRICKLER, and Sheila and Krista JOBB. Surviving, also, are two sisters Emma RIVETT and Shirley DUSTOW, and a brother, William. George farmed most of his life in Colborne and Ashfield Townships and ran a small corn drying business. In his early years, George received his Pilot's Licence and shared a small plane. Later, it was traded for his first sailboat and a long history of sailing, racing and exploration of Georgian Bay began. George and Ruth owned and operated Huron Marine, one of the few successful marine supply businesses that was more than ten miles from the nearest water. The family has requested that instead of cards and flowers, contributions be made, in George's memory, to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. A memorial service and interment will be held sometime in the spring.
