Esther RAPHAEL
By Robert RAPHAEL,
Wednesday,
February 16, 2005 - Page A18
Daughter, mother, grandmother, manager. Born November 7, 1911,
in Toronto. Died November 14, 2004, of Alzheimer's disease, aged
In 1912, a doctor returned to an immigrant home in Toronto to
re-examine a one-year-old child. His suspicion was confirmed:
Esther PEARLSTONE had polio, mild enough to obviate a wheelchair,
but serious enough to impede her mobility for the rest of her
life.
Her father, a rabbi, had arrived in Canada alone in 1905 and
had saved for five years to bring his family over from Poland.
Only Esther was Canadian-born. Two sons would go to university.
But Esther went to secretarial school.
In 1929, when she was 17, prospects changed. The Canadian economy
fell off a cliff. The Depression created a permanent mind-set
in Esther, a morbid fear/certainty that a collapse might recur.
She and her brothers rejected the faith of her parents. Rooted
in ritual and
in European poverty it compounded their marginalization
in Canada.
Amid the torpor came romance. Her partner was handsome, slender,
Latin, self-educated, and somewhat quixotic. They married in
1938 and with the war there came, at last, work. In 1943 she
gave birth to a son after three days of labour. The polio was
the problem and she was not supposed to survive. Three years
later she delivered a second son. Her husband joined the army
and but then was diagnosed with diabetes.
After the war, Esther worked as a bookkeeper-office manager,
usually in small Jewish-owned companies in Toronto. She raised
two children, coped with a broken marriage, and ran the office.
She survived for her children's sake, and the ambient humiliation,
poverty, and viciousness had to be secondary.
She was practical. If working meant putting a child into a Catholic
nursery so be it. If begging from affluent Friends and relatives
was called for, it was done. She took in and cared for her widowed
father until his death. Esther was organized, disciplined, and
outwardly cheerful. In the Fifties the family left the decaying
inner city for the suburbs.
Esther worked at the Colonial Tavern, a jazz centre on Yonge
St. It was not a place for the naive. She dealt with the staff,
with the owners, and with the Louis Armstrongs of this world,
whom she saw in terms that were only too human.
Esther was wise, independent, and knowledgeable. She had energy
and ideas. She, and others, succeeded in preserving Clanton Park
as a recreational area in North York. She also participated in
the founding of the New Democratic Party, which she supported
all her life.
Esther combined tolerance with insight into the human condition.
She once resigned a job rather than accept an impropriety. The
owner, ruined, later came by. No one else had been honest with
him.
Esther was frugal. I once suggested she switch roles with the
Minister of Finance. He could mismanage her income of $12,000.
and she would balance his budget of billions. Widowed and retired,
the children grown, Esther took careful stock of her life. She
bought a small condo in Florida where she spent 10 happy winters.
Queried about a male friend's place close by, she replied that
she had never been there. "What would people think?"
She returned permanently to Toronto complaining of slight memory
loss. As the Alzheimer's developed, her residence rapidly became
a prison, her body a cell, her life an endless frustration. "Please
take me home. I promise to be good," she would repeat. The descent
was divisive, long, slow, unforgiving, brutal. Much comfort was
provided by her second son.
Last spring, we were advised that the end was nigh and travelled
to Toronto, prayer-book in hand. She rallied for six months.
But in November, Esther died.
Robert is Esther's son.
