I Remember -- Bill
CAMERON
By Frank PEERS,
Friday,
March 25, 2005, Page S7
Frank PEERS, professor emeritus of political science at the University
of Toronto, writes about Bill Cameron, whose obituary ran on
March 14.
In 1989, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation asked me for an
interview marking the inauguration of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Newsworld. I had, with others, made representations favouring
a second channel, but not necessarily an all-news channel that
the Caplan-Sauvageau commission had recommended. I was delighted
to find that the interviewer was Bill
CAMERON, whom I knew only
for his work on The Journal in the previous six years.
During the interview, Bill showed an unusual degree of interest
in my thoughts on how Newsworld should operate. Although I was
long separated from the radio and television world, I had, until
1963, been head of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation public affairs
and (in an advisory capacity) director of information programming,
including news.
I expressed my preference for maintaining a distinction between
a balanced news-reporting service and the more controversial
representation of opinion in broadcasts that were labelled "public
affairs" or, in later years, "current affairs."
Bill extended the interview beyond its intended length and challenged
me in a most thoughtful way. I was pressed hard, and only the
viewer could determine which interpretation was to be favoured.
I regretted Bill's loss to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
some 10 years later and, even more, I regret his loss to Canadian
journalism in 2005.
