KLEMENT, Olga M. (formerly
WILLIAMS, née
HARGREAVES)
(April 23, 1930-April 27, 2005)
Olga slipped peacefully into the afterlife on Wednesday, April
27, 2005 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Audenshaw,
Lancashire, England she was the only child of Harry and Ethel
HARGREAVES.
She attended the University of Manchester graduating
with an Honours degree in Architecture in 1953. She and David
WILLIAMS, a graduate of the School of Town Planning at Manchester
were married in 1955; their daughter Claire Margaret was born
in 1956. In 1958 they all emigrated to Canada. Her interest in
the arts led her to join the Art Gallery of Ontario and became
a life member. She joined the Toronto Heliconian Club, and served
a term as president. After a divorce she became more heavily
involved in the arts; she taught at the Ontario College of Art
and Design, wrote for the Ontario Crafts Council publication,
Toronto Life, and was the author of the entry 'Canadian Interior
Architecture' for the 36 volume Dictionary of Art published by
Gage. In 1979 she was one of the founding members of the Canadian
Society of Decorative Arts/Centre Canadian des arts décoratifs
and its first president. Olga wrote numerous articles for the
society's publication The Bulletin, illustrated by photographs
by her husband Miro C.
KLEMENT.
Mrs.
KLEMENT's interest in social
causes centred on C.O.R.E. (Centre for Opportunities, Respect
and Empowerment), an agency first established in 1914 in Toronto
to provide support for women whose husbands were fighting in
World War I. At this time it was known as the Women's Sheltered
Workshop. Olga became a board member in 1969 and served as president
for a number of years. Her greatest joy was her family, the company
of her daughter Claire
OLANOW and granddaughter Meredith. Her
life changed after she met Miro
KLEMENT in 1979 - they were married
in Osgoode Hall on December 30, 1999. They shared an interest
in the history of architecture, in art, in music, in oriental
art and Miro's passion for photography. The culmination of one
of their most important goals was achieved in finding the suitable
resting place for the material which relates to Miro's family
in Prague during the 1930's and 40's. They are especially pleased
that the family archive will remain in Toronto, at the Thomas
Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto. A Memorial
Service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. at St.
James Cemetery in the Chapel of St. James-the-Less, 635 Parliament
Street, Toronto. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, memorial
donations may be made to Sierra Legal Defence Fund: 131 Water
Street, Suite 214, Vancouver, British Columbia V6B 9Z9 or to C.O.R.E.,
11 Charlotte Street, Toronto, Ontario M5V 2H5. Personal family condolences
may be made by e-mail to: mck@accglobal.net. Funeral arrangements
are entrusted with Turner and Porter 'Yorke' Chapel, Toronto 416-767-3153.
