NUNES,
Biri -- Dispatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,
December 31, 2005, Page M4
Biri NUNES was a real-life wedding crasher who couldn't stay
away when the dining area in the residence where she lived was
rented out for a function.
"Once the doors were open after dinner, she'd sneak in to dance,"
Yvette MEDER said this week, describing her grandmother who died
in Toronto at the age of 99. "She loved to be in the limelight."
Ms. MEDER was able to build a close relationship with her grandmother,
who spent most of her life in Hungary and didn't come to North
America until the 1980s. Ms.
NUNES and her husband went first
to the United States, where he died. She then settled in Toronto,
where her daughter, Erika, had come after fleeing Hungary in
Although gregarious, Ms.
NUNES almost never spoke about her experiences
as an observant Jew in Budapest during the Second World War.
After her grandmother's death on September 14, Ms.
MEDER heard
again how her grandparents were forced to move into the Jewish
ghetto.
In 1944, the war was almost over, but the desperate couple did
not know it. One day, Ms.
NUNES left off her yellow star and
sneaked from the ghetto to the Spanish embassy. Bursting past
the sentry at the guardhouse, she was pursued into the building,
where she threw herself on the mercy of a clerk.
Admiring her nerve, the Spanish officials gave her the papers
that allowed the family to move into a safe house for the remainder
of the war. At Ms.
NUNES's funeral, her daughter told the crowd
that she owed her life to that single determined act.
