JANNAWAY, Jean Elizabeth "Betty" (née
SHEPHERD)
(August 31, 1919 to March 20, 2005)
Betty passed away peacefully at Oak Bay Lodge in Victoria after
many months of declining health. She was predeceased by her husband
Donald Renwick
JANNAWAY, and her brother Charles
SHEPHERD.
She
is survived by her brothers George and Don
SHEPHERD, and her
sister Shirley (Bill)
HEFLER; her sister-in-law Marjorie (Chuck)
SHEPHERD, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children
in Eastern Canada.
Mom will also be sadly missed by her sons Grant (Janet) and Graeme
(Leigh) and grandchildren Bradley (Tamara), Donovan (Janet),
Claire (David)
LUTTMANN, and Andrew, as well as great grandchildren
Grant and Julianna
LUTTMANN.
Betty was born and raised with her loving family in St. Catharines,
Ontario. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church
in Canada from her early years; teaching Sunday school, leading
C.G.I.T., and many years leading Couples Clubs and Young Peoples
groups with Don. Betty was a life member and past president of
the Women's Missionary Society and also an Elder at Rosedale
Presbyterian Church in Toronto. She continued her work in St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church during her time in Victoria, by visiting
the elderly, helping with "Open church" days, plus Bible study
and actively supporting the Book Club.
Work with books and literacy was a lifelong pleasure. Betty graduated
in Library Science from Ryerson Institute. She worked as a librarian
for television Ontario and taught reading to adults through York
University, University of Toronto and George Brown College. As
well as supporting literacy programs, church libraries, and book
clubs, Betty loved to read to the young people in her family,
giving them all books to treasure.
Betty supported and worked for many charitable organizations,
during a lifetime of giving. The Arthritis Society of Canada,
Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, British
Columbia Lung Association and Salvation Army were of particular
interest for her heartfelt fund raising efforts.
A gracious hostess, Betty opened her home here and
in Toronto
to many travelers: students, church guests and others needing
a place to rest. As well she welcomed numerous Friends to meetings,
and parties for the organizations she supported.
Mom always said "the most important things in life were family
and relationships". She always had time and energy for Friends
and family especially the youngsters in her life. She expressed
her regret that her life wouldn't be long enough to "see what
these wonderful people would become"
The family wishes to express their thanks and immense appreciation
to the staff at Oak Bay Lodge for the tender care they provided
to our mother and grandmother these past months, especially in
her final days. Thanks also to Reverend Dr. and Mrs. Currie as well
as Dr. M.D. Hunt. A service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, Victoria, on Thursday March 24th, 2005 at 10: 00 am. We
will gather with Friends and family to celebrate Betty's life
in May at Toronto, followed by interment of ashes. Arrangements
will be announced later. You may wish to remember Betty by donating
to the Oak Bay Lodge Foundation 2251 Cadboro Bay Road, Victoria,
British Columbia, a charity of your choice, or by giving a book
to a child.
