Victim mowed down by car
Man, 23, dies in hit-run near home
Toronto driver faces charges
By Andrew CHUNG, Staff Reporter with files from Mike FUNSTON, Page B2
Sumit KAPOOR used his friend's cellphone to call his parents Thursday evening, to say he would be home by 6: 30 p.m. But he never made it.
Twenty minutes after his scheduled arrival, police received calls about a Ford Taurus that had chased KAPOOR onto a pedestrian walkway, ran him down and drove away.
The chase, police said yesterday, followed an altercation between KAPOOR and the driver in a nearby parking lot in Thornhill, off New Westminster Dr. just north of Steeles Ave.
KAPOOR, 23, was taken to Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, where he died.
Shaun Edward PLAFKER, 20, of Toronto has been charged with second-degree murder.
At KAPOOR's home on a curved, quiet laneway in Thornhill near where he was struck down, his family remained paralyzed with shock and bewilderment.
One family member wondered through red-rimmed eyes whether it really was KAPOOR who had died. His sister, who had just flown back from Atlanta, pleaded for privacy.
The KAPOOR family moved to Canada from Calcutta, India in 1988. KAPOOR's uncle, Alan LIU, sponsored the family's immigration. KAPOOR's father is Indian while his mother is Chinese. His middle name is Weikang.
Yesterday, a steady stream of family and Friends arrived to offer their condolences.
"We are in terrible shock," LIU said, barely holding back tears.
"He must have got mixed up with some bad people. These weren't his Friends. If they were Friends, why would they just run him down?"
LIU said KAPOOR had called home to say when he would arrive, but he did not indicate he had been in a fight.
LIU described KAPOOR as a quiet young man who enjoyed hanging out with his Friends. He held a job at Swiss Chalet, but had most recently been working as a security guard, LIU said.
Police yesterday had cordoned off the south parking lot at Louis-Honore Frechette Public School on New Westminster Dr.
Across the street, the path leads onto a residential street -- Mabley Cr. A single, bluish-coloured streak runs the length of the path.
The KAPOOR household is only a couple of blocks away.
Police won't say what sparked the fight.
PLAFKER was being held for a bail hearing in Newmarket.
