GOURLAY,
Robert
William, Q.C.
Died June 16, 2005. Born April 30, 1948, Rob grew up in Vancouver,
attended Point Grey Secondary School, University of British Columbia,
and UofT law school then returned to Vancouver to practise law.
It was in Toronto that Rob met the love of his life, Kathleen
KEATING, whom he would marry in 1976. Together they had two boys,
Matthew (1979) and Kevin (1981) with whom Rob shared a love of
baseball, politics and Bob Dylan.
Professionally, he worked in the Crown Counsel office from 1975-80
before going into private practice with Peter
SPENCER, a close
friend since childhood -- a partnership that has lasted ever
since. Widely respected in the legal profession, he was President
of the Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch (1992-93),
a member of the Canadian Bar Association National Executive for
two terms in the early 1990s, and an elected Bencher of the Law
Society of British Columbia from 1996 to 2004. He is also a former
President of the Sir Winston Churchill Society of British Columbia
Along with Peter and Daphne
SPENCER, in 1990 Rob and Kathleen
purchased property near Merritt that they christened Black Pine
Ranch, where he could be found on weekends riding horses, mending
fences, and stoking the campfire. He also derived great pleasure
from swimming at Jericho and Roberts Creek, reading history,
and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle.
He was unusually generous and kind. Although he had struggled
mightily against depression for many years, and especially in
recent weeks, Rob derived great joy from the companionship of
so many Friends and family members, especially Kathleen and the
boys. The family has been overwhelmed and comforted by the outpouring
of love and support from those who enjoyed his Friendship over
the years.
He is predeceased by his father, Dr. Robert H.
GOURLAY and survived
by his mother Elizabeth
GOURLAY, sister Mary
LEPATOUREL, her
husband Doug, and their children Greg and Deborah.
A memorial tribute will be held Friday, June 24th at 5: 30 in
the Great Hall of the Law Courts, 800 Smithe St. All are welcome.
Though we miss him more than words can express, we are forever
grateful to have been a part of his life.

Giuseppe "Joe"
LEPORE
By Lubomyr
LUCIUK,
Tuesday,
August 30, 2005, Page A16
Professor, bon vivant, author, founding member of The Royal Winers,
soccer enthusiast, friend. Born September 12, 1937, in Caserta,
Italy. Died July 27, in Kingston, Ontario, of brain cancer, aged
There was a Joe.
And there was a Giuseppe.
I met Joe first. That was at the Royal Military College of Canada,
in 1990. He was rather like a "cup of Joe" -- that first cup
of coffee in the morning -- stimulating, welcoming, comforting,
a straight shooter who eased many into the life of our department
at Royal Military College. Most came to look forward to going
into work daily, if only because it was such a delight to spend
time with Joe. Unpretentious about his learning yet a much-admired
teacher and colleague, Joe was a font of good counsel, always
gently dispersed.
He quite truly became the soul of our department. If you missed
seeing him you would, at the end of the day, leave feeling somehow
diminished.
We will all have to get used to that now.
And then there was Giuseppe. Most of us met him somewhat later.
He was a European gentleman, a bon vivant, a connoisseur of opera,
soccer and of fine food and wines (at this point, he would oblige
me to add: "Italian, of course!")
He was a founding member and the guiding spirit of The Royal
Winers. That small band, picked from the professorate of the
Royal Military College and Queen's University, regularly holds
symposia where we enjoy the grape but, even more importantly,
share thoughts and hopes, and in doing so becoming better teachers.
(Now I confess that I was less enthusiastic about Giuseppe's
love of soccer. I don't play myself and even those who joined
him in their daily, noon-time game would agree that it was never
clear which team he rooted for, although it was certainly going
to be an Italian one. It can finally be revealed that his favourite
club was actually Team Milan. And, on a personal note, I can
likewise affirm that Giuseppe became particularly partisan in
his support for that team after they acquired a new striker by
the name of Andriy Shevchenko.)
We all looked forward to decades more in each other's good company.
It was in that spirit that Giuseppe selected a motto for The
Royal Winers, drawing from the words of Thomas Moore, "though
youth gave love and roses, age still leaves us Friends and wine."
And indeed his life was truly filled with love, and many, many
roses. He was married twice, to two very remarkable women: Carmen,
and Fiora. The former blessed him with a daughter, Leonora, whom
he cherished. Leonora, in turn, brought him two grand_sons, Seneca
and Alessandro, whom he lived long enough to enjoy. The latter,
Fiora, whom he often spoke of as the love of his life, stood
true even as illness overtook him, becoming an angel by his side
as he journeyed to his all-too-early end.
Our friend did not reach the future we so often talked about,
that time in our lives when we expected to together share the
wines that we, under his competent direction, had collected and
so carefully stored, anticipating what has now become an impossible
future.
Of course we still have those aging wines and some of us will,
some day, drink them and recall him.
But I know that no matter how good the wines that we set aside
are, none of them will ever be quite as delicious or as refreshing,
as giving of life and joy, as they would have been if our Joe,
our Giuseppe, were still with us to break bread and eat of it,
to take the cup and drink from it.
Lubomyr LUCIUK is one of Joe's many Friends.
