Body found downtown
By Amy LAZAR, Thursday, October 13, 2005
Yellow tape secured a downtown corner for more than 14 hours yesterday after a 38-year-old Stratford man was found dead on the concrete outside the OLCO gas bar.
A cab driver from A&A Taxi noticed a man lying unconscious at the gas station around 3 a.m., said Henry MacDONALD, a night dispatcher for the company.
MacDONALD phoned the Ontario Provincial Police.
Police arrived on the scene and found a man with no vital signs. Police said the man was transported to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Calling the death suspicious, police released few details about the incident.
The Packet has learned the dead man is Liam BROADMORE, 38, of Stratford.
BROADMORE was heading home after spending Thanksgiving weekend at a family cottage near head Lake, about 30 kilometres east of Washago, a source told The Packet.
Yesterday, police roped off the corner of Peter and Colborne streets before dawn.
Around 9 a.m., the yellow police tape that ran across Peter Street at Mississaga Street was moved closer to the Colborne Street intersection.
A few businesses on Peter Street remained closed for the day. The RBC Financial Group was open but the drive-thru was blocked off.
The OLCO gas station has been closed for business since Tuesday at 10 p.m.
“It's a tragedy for everyone in town,” said the owner of the gas bar, Arfan AHMAD, from his home yesterday.
He found out about the investigation from his employee, who showed up to open the station at 6 a.m.
“I was shocked to hear that she couldn't open the store,” said AHMAD.
After receiving that phone call, he went to see for himself.
A black Ford Explorer with purple and white markings on the side, believed to be the victim's vehicle, was parked on the gas bar property.
Police marked a pool of blood and a red and black jacket, which were on the ground, close to the car's front bumper, as evidence.
There were 17 evidence markers at the blocked-off corner.
Eight Ontario Provincial Police officers surrounded the perimeter, reminding people to stay back from the scene and redirecting traffic.

Fire victim laid to rest
Blaze at Silver Swan Villa Motel claimed life of 57-year-old man
By Amy LAZAR, Wednesday, November 23, 2005
A memorial service was held yesterday for a man who died after fire engulfed his room at the Silver Swan Villa Motel.
Charles SNOXELL, 57, was rescued by Orillia firefighters early Friday morning as fire and smoke billowed out from Unit 8, where he lived.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but deputy fire Chief Ralph DOMINELLI said one possible cause is the “improper discarding of smoking material.&rdquo
DOMINELLI's crew arrived on the scene at 114 Davey Dr. around 5 a.m. and encountered heavy flames coming from the unit, he said.
“The crew had to fast-attack the fire with water, and then rescue a victim still stuck in the unit,” said DOMINELLI.
Two firefighters went in and found SNOXELL breathing and crouched in a corner.
He was taken to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital and transferred to Toronto's Sunnybrook hospital with first-degree burns to 50 per cent of his body and severe smoke inhalation.
He died in the burn centre Saturday evening.
“Our guys were shocked to find him breathing after what he'd been through,” said DOMINELLI.
During the rescue, debris from the ceiling landed on one firefighter's shoulder. He had to ask the captain to knock it off because it was burning through his gear.
The incident shook residents at the motel. The resident in Unit 9, where there is water damage, has moved out.
DOMINELLI said two neighbouring residents had helped pull a burning mattress from the unit before the fire crew got there.
The resident in Unit 7 said he tried to put out some flames with a fire extinguisher.
“I went in the door about four feet, but it was smoky and pitch black and I couldn't see (SNOXELL,”) said Gord, who didn't want his last name used.
The estimated damage is between $35,000 and $50,000.
The fire department is still awaiting a forensic report that will reveal why the smoke alarm did not operate.
Meanwhile, more than 75 family and Friends attended the memorial service for SNOXELL at Simcoe Funeral Home.
Photos were displayed of the man whose memoriam cards said, “Despite (his) limitations, he was always willing and anxious to help others in need.&rdquo
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lighthouse Christian Ministries.

After a lengthy illness, passed away at Copernicus Lodge in Toronto on June 17, 2005. Born 85 years ago in Serbia, "baba Kale", besides being a great mother and grandmother, was also a fiery Serbian nationalist, for which she was persecuted in former communist Yugoslavia. After leaving Belgrade in 1958 she spent 5 years in West Germany, after which in 1963 she was finally reunited with her son and brother in Chicago, U.S.A. There she spent the next 9 years. After her husband, Mr. Vojislav LAZAREVICH died, she came to live in Toronto in 1972 where she was married to Mr. Milan LAZAREVICH. For the last 33 years, she worked tirelessly for the Serbian Orthodox Church, Serbian Brothers Help, and a host of other Serbian organizations and causes. Respecting her last wishes, her body will be sent to Chicago where visitation will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 24th at Holy Mount Funeral Home. Funeral will be St. Sava Serbian Cemetery in Libertiville, Illinois, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 25th, 2005. On behalf of her grand_son George, daughter-in-law Vanya, and son Milan G. NEDIC, as well as many relatives in Serbia, we want to thank all Friends for their kindness in helping us to take care of "baba Kale." We owe special gratitude to Mrs. Branka JAUKOVICH of Toronto for critical role she played in providing the very best care for "baba Kale's" for the last 5 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Serbian Brothers Help through Mrs. Branka JAUKOVICH in Toronto, or Mr. Dushan DJORDJEVICH in Chicago.
