KOERNER,
Karin
Elizabeth (née
VIKSTEN)
Karin E. KOERNER passed away in Victoria, British Columbia on
15 July 2005 after a short but courageous struggle with cancer.
Karin is survived and sorely missed by her children Stephen,
Marianne (Rodolfo) and James, her sister Marta
WILSON of Mill
Creek, Washington, granddaughters Francesca and Giuliana and
other family members throughout North America and Sweden. She
was predeceased by her parents Lisa and Albert
VIKSTEN, older
brothers Sven and Hans and husband Nicholas
KOERNER.
Karin was
born on 28 January 1928 in Farila, Sweden. She enjoyed a happy
childhood being raised in a lively and artistic environment.
Karin met Nicholas in 1949 when he visited Sweden on a business
trip. They subsequently married, settled in Vancouver, British
Columbia and started a family. In 1958 employment opportunities
caused them to move to the San Francisco Bay Area. The family
returned to Canada in 1967 and created a permanent home in Victoria,
British Columbia. Karin was a devoted mother to her children,
a loyal friend and someone who touched countless people with
her warm and outgoing personality. She was a keen supporter of
the arts in general and the Victoria Symphony, Pacific Opera
Victoria and the Art Gallery of Victoria in particular. An artist
herself, Karin exhibited her paintings at various shows in Canada
and the U.S.A. Karin was also a tireless advocate on behalf of
the mentally handicapped and served on the board of directors
of the Garth Homer Society for many years. One of her proudest
achievements was to arrange the English language translation
and publication of two books, one of her brother Hans' artwork,
the other a collection of writings of her father Albert
VIKSTEN
which vividly describe his many visits to Canada over the years.
The family would like to thank her caregivers including Dr. Gary
Nielsen, Sue Bleakley, the Victoria Hospice, South Victoria Home
Care Society as well as her Friends Gunvor, Shushan, Muriel and
Bill, Barbro and Stephen, Bjorn and Barbara and Fatima who all helped
so much during the final weeks of Karin's life. There will be
a private memorial service later in the summer. In lieu of flowers,
donations to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Garth
Homer Foundation.
