We said goodbye August 29, 2002.
We honour Tim's memory today which would have been his 42nd birthday.
A special smile, a special face
Apart of our family we can never replace,
Loved and remembered every day.
Missed more than words can say.
To some he may be forgotten
To others a part of the past
But to the family who knew and loved him
His memory will always last.
Remembered and always loved by Mom and family.

worse in recent months after several bouts with pneumonia, the
last having taken him from us prematurely. He is survived by

by his sister, Jarmila, and brother, Jiri. Emerich, lumber engineer
and 3rd generation piano manufacturer emigrated with his family
to Canada in 1968 and unknowingly embarked on a fruitful and
rewarding journey. Emerich committed a large part of his life
to the pursuit of art and art collecting and art rewarded him
equally in return. When he first established his gallery in Yorkville
in 1973, he could not have foreseen meeting and befriending the
numerous wonderful people that were to play such an important
role in his life over the next three decades. His passion had
surrounded him with both artists and art collectors; professionals

was both businessman and gentleman and loved to share his extensive
knowledge of Canadian and International art wherever he was.
He was very thankful for the close group of Friends with whom
he shared much of his success and happiness as an Art Dealer.
His family will forever remember him for his copious love, his

Oakville man dies in marathon
Two other runners have died in Toronto race in the last four
years
witnesses: say it took too long to get collapsed man to hospital
By Donovan
VINCENT,
Staff
Reporter
For the second year in a row, a runner has died in the Toronto
Marathon.
The unidentified 36-year-old Oakville man was running in the
half-marathon yesterday morning with thousands of others and
collapsed moments after crossing the finish line on Queen's Park
Circle, just south of Hoskin Ave.
Three people have died in the event in the last four years.
Medical personnel working with the race rushed to his aid, first
trying cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, then a defibrillator.
As an ambulance tried to get through the crowd, he was placed
on a stretcher while health workers continued trying cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation and administering oxygen. He was carried on a stretcher
to Wellesley St. and then to Mount Sinai Hospital with no vital
signs, Toronto Emergency Medical Services said.
A number of witnesses: said it took too long for the man to be
put in an ambulance and taken to hospital.
"It did take a long time," said Janet
DOGON of Thornhill. She
was at the finish line because her daughter and a friend ran
the half-marathon
Race director Jay
GLASSMAN said some members of the medical team
in place for the race -- 30 registered nurses and about seven
doctors -- attended to the man and there was an ambulance on
site.
GLASSMAN said he can't comment on the time it took to get the
man to hospital because he doesn't have all the details.
Last year 42-year-old Scott
LABRON of Guelph, a married father
of four, died minutes before crossing the finish line. He was
also running in the half-marathon. It's suspected he suffered
a heart attack, but no cause of death was revealed after test
results.
In 2001, 50-year-old Aurora businessman Bob
HARTWELL, who had
run the Boston Marathon several times, died of a heart attack
running in the full marathon.
"Things like this happen, unfortunately. It's statistically rare
when it happens,"
GLASSMAN said, adding big marathons like those
in Boston and New York have had fatalities.
"I went to watch the New York Marathon years ago and two people
died," he said.
Before the race, organizers were expecting about 2,500 for the
42.195-kilometre marathon, about 5,000 in the half-marathon,
up to 1,500 for the 5-kilometre and around 1,200 for the relay.
The marathon and half-marathon begin at Mel Lastman Square in
North York.
GLASSMAN said the deaths are "no reflection" on the Toronto Marathon
course. "There are marathons at high altitudes, low altitudes,
in good weather in bad weather," he said. "We had good conditions.
It was windy, which was a hindrance, but that's about it."
Runners must sign a waiver before taking part.
But with thousands of runners in the race "it's not feasible
to have them all go to a cardiologist or get a physical before
the race,"
GLASSMAN said.
The Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which staged its fourth annual
race last month, has had no fatalities.
David CHERUIYOT of Kenya finished first in the main event for
the men with an official time of 2: 17:12.2. Rito Regules
JARDON
of Toluca, Mexico, was second and Danny
KASSAP of Toronto third.
A Canadian came first in the women's marathon. Lioudmila
KORTCHAGUINA
of Thornhill captured the women's title with a time of 2: 37:17.7,
ahead of Kathryn
MacNAMARA of Dundas and Isabelle
LEDROIT of
Montreal.
First place in the men's and women's marathon came with a cheque
for $15,000.

James Alexander
CALVERT
By Maria KASSTAN,

Husband, father, artist's model, chess player, gardener. Born
June 15, 1947, in Hamilton, Ontario Died October 1, 2004, of
a heart attack, in Toronto, aged 57.
Jim spent his first 10 years on the family farm just outside
of Dunnville, Ontario Then his father died of a heart attack
at age 49, and this tragedy would leave its mark on Jim for the
rest of his life.
There were probably only two nerdy, chess-playing youths in Dunnville
in the 1960s and Jim was one of them. Seeking to understand his
own obsessive, withdrawn personality, he read psychology and
self-help books instead of high-school texts.
He learned a lot of theories about human nature but continued
to remain a mystery to himself. Perhaps the closest he ever got
to labelling his condition was Asperger's Syndrome, but that
was quite late in life and didn't quite fit him, either.
We met outside the Brunswick Tavern in 1977. I was selling roses
from a basket and he was hawking "tomorrow's paper" -- The Globe
and Mail's early edition that came out at 10 p.m.
By 1979 this total introvert was bewildered to find himself in
a relationship with me, struggling to be a stepfather to Emilie
and Daniel, and looking forward with trepidation to the arrival
of his own firstborn, Ian.
He was, as it turned out, a natural with babies (and dogs) but
he could never quite comprehend fully formed verbal humans.
We worked as artists' models and began to grow a lot of our own
fruits and vegetables. Jim was physically strong, dug a garden
with speed and grace, and walked several miles almost every day.
Our daughter, Flora, was born in 1987.
In recent years, we became involved in the urban agriculture
movement. On the morning of October 1, we were on our way to
two different venues of the North American Community Gardening
Association Conference.
Jim was on the corner of Dundas and Bay at 8: 45 am pulling a
bundle buggy full of literature for the Seeds of Diversity information
table. He was heading into Toronto's Courtyard Marriott Hotel
on Yonge Street just north of College Street. We may never know
if he caught a Bay Street bus or started walking, nor exactly
at what moment he arrived at 40 College Street and, feeling unwell,
lay down on a bench.
That bright morning, the neighbourhood was bustling.
When two police officers found Jim, they may have assumed he'd
been there too long. A 911 call was placed from inside the building
by a third officer. The ambulance arrived four minutes later.
By then it really was too late for Jim, and all our dreams went
with him.
Jim experienced time differently than most of us do. The past
was all golden nostalgia, poignant vignettes and missed opportunities.
The present was an explosion of frustration or endless tantric
bliss. He never quite grasped the future in concrete terms. For
instance, he could never make plans for next week or even tomorrow.
But he often experienced a general vague prescience about "how
things would work out."
This was sometimes expressed as brash confidence or even grim
fatalism.
On his last morning, for the first time I can recall, he dressed
all in black, and like Paladin, the Sixties television cowboy
hero, rode off into the sunset.
Jim lived his life as if he had all the time in the world. I
always hoped he knew that this was so.
Low blood pressure, normal cholesterol, a lithe and slender body,
all seemed to promise a long life. His body was his temple. It
was my temple, too.
Maria KASSTAN is Jim's wife.
