EVANS,
Victoria -- Dispatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,
May 7, 2005, Page M4
Champion pie-maker Victoria
EVANS sold the restaurant she ran
with her husband more than 30 years ago, but her baking skills
were remembered long after that.
Ms. EVANS's daughter, Dena
NICOLOFF, recalls her mother working
in the basement of Ted's Restaurant in East York, surrounded
by mounds of flour as she made batches of pies, 60 at a time.
"My job when I would help her would be to take the fork and prick
the pie crusts," she says, adding, "If you see me, you'll know
that I also had lots of pie."
She wasn't the only fan of the pies, as several hundred people
turned up at the funeral to remember her. It "was surprising
because my mother's been ill for about 11 years and she's been
out of the community," Ms.
NICOLOFF says. "But a lot of people
came because they all remember Vicky's pies."
Ms. EVANS died on April 19 at the age of 81, many years after
having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her recipe for
pogacha, a Macedonian version of sweet egg bread, was handed
out at the funeral home.
Born Victoria
TENEKEFF in Toronto in 1924, she was a first-generation
Macedonian Canadian who met her immigrant husband, now 91, while
both were working at Eaton's. He was employed under the name
Ted EVANS because he had found it too hard to find a job with
the name Metody Gelentsoff
IVANOFF.
The couple married in 1944 and opened the restaurant at Pape
and O'Connor four years later, giving Ms.
EVANS the chance to
hone the baking skills she had learned from an uncle.
She won acclaim by snagging an honourable mention at a restaurant
contest and by picking up awards from Black Creek Pioneer Village
and the Robin Hood Bake Festival at Harbourfront.
"She loved her desserts," Ms.
NICOLOFF says. "Even in the nursing
home, if you couldn't feed her anything, she always liked ice
cream or some kind of sweet."
