EVANS, Victoria -- Dispatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, May 7, 2005, Page M4
Champion pie-maker Victoria EVANS sold the restaurant she ran with her husband more than 30 years ago, but her baking skills were remembered long after that.
Ms. EVANS's daughter, Dena NICOLOFF, recalls her mother working in the basement of Ted's Restaurant in East York, surrounded by mounds of flour as she made batches of pies, 60 at a time.
"My job when I would help her would be to take the fork and prick the pie crusts," she says, adding, "If you see me, you'll know that I also had lots of pie."
She wasn't the only fan of the pies, as several hundred people turned up at the funeral to remember her. It "was surprising because my mother's been ill for about 11 years and she's been out of the community," Ms. NICOLOFF says. "But a lot of people came because they all remember Vicky's pies."
Ms. EVANS died on April 19 at the age of 81, many years after having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her recipe for pogacha, a Macedonian version of sweet egg bread, was handed out at the funeral home.
Born Victoria TENEKEFF in Toronto in 1924, she was a first-generation Macedonian Canadian who met her immigrant husband, now 91, while both were working at Eaton's. He was employed under the name Ted EVANS because he had found it too hard to find a job with the name Metody Gelentsoff IVANOFF.
The couple married in 1944 and opened the restaurant at Pape and O'Connor four years later, giving Ms. EVANS the chance to hone the baking skills she had learned from an uncle.
She won acclaim by snagging an honourable mention at a restaurant contest and by picking up awards from Black Creek Pioneer Village and the Robin Hood Bake Festival at Harbourfront.
"She loved her desserts," Ms. NICOLOFF says. "Even in the nursing home, if you couldn't feed her anything, she always liked ice cream or some kind of sweet."

STEWARD/STEWART/STUART, John Patrick Connell (September 11th, 1932-June 17th, T'was time to lay your burden down and free your noble spirit to soar with the birds once more. Our dearly beloved John passed away on Friday, June 17th. John was a remarkable man who battled his extremely rare cancer for two years with his quiet grace and dignity. John accomplished many dreams in his life, and lived his years to the fullest. He was a gentle passionate man who embraced challenges in all aspects of his life and found joi de vivre in them all. John received his P.Eng. and M.B.A. from the University of Toronto and his M.P.A. from York, and followed this by a career in the field he enjoyed so much. John was blessed with his wonderful parents Madge and Jack (predeceased), with his wife Jeanne with whom he shared his dreams, was father to beloved children Kelly and husband Alf IVANY, and to Sean, and father for Russ COOPER and his partner Kim, and Robert COOPER and his wife Vicki, and John-Dad to Laura and Connie. To add to John's joy were his delightful grandchildren Amanda, Michael, Lisa, Taylor, Megan and Bobby. To all those who knew John, family and Friends, he will always be remembered as the man he was: one of warmth, caring, eclectic, erudite, witty and widespread knowledge. We wish to give special thanks to his wonderful Dr. Joe MIKHAEL of the Myeloma Clinic, Princess Margaret Hospital, and to Dr. CHIN and the Oncology and Palliative Care nurses at Lakeridge Oshawa, and to Dr. PETROSONIAK, and all of the support groups that cared for John in the City of Kawartha Lakes. As John would want, we wish to celebrate his life on Saturday next, June 25th at 2: 00 p.m. at the home of Russ and Kim in Lindsay. Call 705-878-3405 for details. We welcome all those Friends and loved ones who would wish to celebrate with us. In lieu of flowers, we would ask that you make a donation, in John's name, towards Multiple Myeloma Research by calling the Princess Margaret Foundation at 416-946-6560, or to any charity of your choice that would help make a positive difference in this world. He danced the dance of life and oh how he danced!
