Killer linked to home
Connection cited to previous occupant
But police can't explain murder-suicide

A man who killed his friend in a North York driveway and then
entered the house before taking his own life is connected to
a previous occupant, police say.
But they have no explanation for why the man killed himself and
his friend.
The victim has been identified as Ioan Corin
BAICU, 32, a Toronto
resident and father of two young children. Police believe he
was shot and killed by Iani
GUSITA, 24, of Mississauga, who minutes
later shot himself after entering a home on Talwood Dr., near
Lawrence Ave. E. and Leslie Street, around 8: 30 p.m. Saturday.
Both men were born in Romania but were now Canadian citizens.
Homicide
Det.
Randy
CARTER, who is in charge of the case, described
the pair as close Friends. "Right now I can find no reason why
Iani GUSITA would have taken Mr.
BAICU's life," he told a news
conference.
While investigators can find no motive for the murder-suicide,
CARTER said police have learned
GUSITA was suffering from depression.
CARTER provided an overview of the investigation so far. Before
8: 30 p.m.,
BAICU steered his silver four-door Honda Civic into
the driveway of the house belonging to Peter and Susan
HYUN.
The car had two children's car seats in the back.
GUSITA was
his passenger. "Iani
GUSITA shot Ioan
BAICU while still seated
in this automobile in the driveway,"
CARTER said.
GUSITA then approached the front of the house, shot out the window
beside the door and entered the beige bungalow through the broken
window. He came face to face with a 58-year-old resident who
had been watching television.
"He said nothing to this female and immediately took his own
life by shooting himself in the head,"
CARTER said.
The woman called 911. Police arrived and found
BAICU in the car
and GUSITA in the front foyer, a large-calibre revolver beside
him. Police are checking the history of the firearm and trying
to retrace the men's steps.
CARTER said police have established a connection between
GUSITA
and a previous male occupant of the house. "However, this is
still being investigated." He wouldn't comment further, citing
"public safety."
The couple have lived in the house for about two decades and
have two children who are away at university, a neighbour said
on the weekend.
CARTER said both men were known to police, but he didn't give
details.
BAICU is the city's 12th homicide victim of 2005.
