MUIR,
Dollie
May
Wong (née
GIN)
Peacefully, at her home in Victoria, British Columbia on October
28, 2005, after a six-month struggle with cancer. Dollie was
born in Herbert, Saskatchewan on December 11, 1944 to the late
Wong and May
GIN.
She is survived by her husband, William; brother-in-law
James
(Margaret) of Toronto; stepdaughter Claire (Mark
HUISMAN)
and stepson Alastair of Toronto; sister Joeline (Sammy)
SHONG
of Victoria; and five brothers: Sueloge (Elaine)

GIN of Gull Lake, Saskatchewan; and Dan (Julie)
THOM of Akron,
Ohio. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
and great-nephews.
Dollie attended schools in Herbert and Victoria, and studied
at the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan. She retired from
teaching English as a Second Language at the University of Regina
in 1997 to come to Victoria. Earlier she had worked in credit
reporting in Regina. Among her activities there were Credit Women
International and the University Women's Club. She did extensive
volunteer work in adult literacy, for which she received an award
from the Regina Public Library.
Travel was one of Dollie's pleasures, and she had fond memories
of wine country tours in Oregon, California, and the Okanagan,
extensive trips to Europe and Asia, and of winter months spent
in Mexico. She enjoyed physical activities such as early morning
jogging, scuba diving, and pumping iron with the Gym Goons at
Planet Fitness. Among the groups in Victoria that will miss Dollie's
contributions are the Hillside Mall Walkers Club, the Oak Bay
Tea Party, and the Saanich Sommeliers winemaking club. Moving
to Victoria presented a challenge that she revelled in: designing
a house and a garden that would end up on the cover of Gardens
West. One of the bitterest blows that cancer dealt her was preventing
her from passing the final test that would have qualified her
for membership in the British Columbia Guild of Wine Judges.
A celebration of Dollie's life will be held on Sunday, December
4, 2005 starting at 2: 00 p.m. at the Horseshoe Club of Victoria
at 620 Kenneth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the
Victoria Hospice, whose compassionate and professional care helped
ease Dollie's way along her difficult voyage.
