ISTONA, Susan (née HOVANEC)
After a brief illness, died peacefully at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, on January 30, 2005, in her 89th year. Beloved wife of the late Anthony ISTONA. Loving mother of Mildred and Margaret, and mother-in-law of Tony BROWN, all of Toronto. Predeceased by her parents, George and Anna HOVANEC, and by her brother, John. Born in Czechoslovakia, January 1, 1917, she emigrated to Canada in 1934 to join her father on his farm in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan. Enroute to the Prairies, romance struck she met her husband-to-be at a train-station stopover in Sudbury, Ontario. They corresponded and married a short time later. She was ever the supportive loving wife and cheerleader of her daughters. A university education for both was a foregone conclusion. A woman of relentless optimism and boundless energy, she participated joyfully in community activities and practiced the homemaking arts with gusto. It must also be said: she grew to love Canada passionately! In 1969, the couple moved to a closeknit neighborhood in Burlington. A funeral mass was celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Burlington on Wednesday, February 2, 2005, followed by interment at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Nick HARITON and the nurses on 17 North and South at Mt. Sinai for their care and compassion. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
