Beloved son of the late Margaret (née McKILLOP) HOCKIN and Thomas Munro HOCKIN of London, Ontario. Cherished brother of Tom (Mary) and David (Heather). Loving father of Amanda (Andrew), Esther and Alexandra. Expert securities analyst, outdoorsman, skier and canoeist. For his robust sense of humour, big smile, joyous sharing of his Georgian Bay cottages, his generous hosting of all celebrations with family and Friends and his deeply felt loyalty to his many "chums", relatives and family, he will be greatly missed. A funeral service for family and Friends of Peter will be held Thursday, August 18 at 10: 30 a.m. at Grace Church on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Road, Toronto. BIRD, John Irvine, Q.C.
Age 87, died very peacefully at home September 17, 2005 surrounded by his family.
John was born September 23, 1917 in Wimbledon, England and completed his high school education at Shawnigan Lake School and commerce degree at University of British Columbia and studied law at Dalhousie University. He played rugby for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and was honoured to be invited to play fullback with the British Columbia All Stars against the New Zealand All Blacks in 1935. When World War 2 broke out he enlisted with the Canadian Navy on loan to the British Navy where he achieved the rank of lieutenant. He served on the destroyers "Wolverine", "Trinidad" and "Argonaut".
After the war he returned to Vancouver with his family and articled in law. He practised maritime law with J.V. Clyne at Campney Owen Murphy and Owen. He and the Hon. Walter Owen were founding partners of Owen Bird. John was a pre-eminent counsel in maritime law, was appointed Queen's Counsel and on many occasions appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada. He served as Chair of Maritime Law of the Canadian Bar Association, Vice-President of the Canadian Maritime Law Association, President of the Plimsoll Club and was appointed to the Vancouver Police Commission.
Predeceased by his parents, Eva and Chief Justice Henry BIRD, his brother William and sister Eve (HOCKIN.) Survived and dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Molly BIRD (née McCALLUM,) sons Michael BIRD (Carolyn) and Brian BIRD (Lora) and daughter Barbara KLOPFENSTEIN (Albrecht,) grandchildren Shelley DESBRISAY, Blake KLOPFENSTEIN, Hallie and Devon BIRD.
Memorial Service to be held on Friday, September 23rd at 2: 00 p.m. at Saint Mary's (Kerrisdale) Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver with a reception to follow at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club - 1630 West 15th Ave., Vancouver.
