Veteran journalist was about to retire

North Bay, Ontario -- A veteran journalist who personified the
profession for more than 40 years has died just weeks shy of
his scheduled retirement.
Arnie HAKALA was found Friday at his North Bay home, dead of
an apparent heart attack.
Originally from Nakina, Ontario, Mr.
HAKALA was to retire July
29, but he had planned to continue working as a freelancer.
In his most recent column published Saturday in the North Bay
Nugget, Mr.
HAKALA said he had no intention of putting his feet
up.
Mr. HAKALA graduated from journalism at Ryerson and began his
long career with the Timmins Daily Press in northern Ontario.
He also worked for The Canadian Press in Toronto, the Hamilton
Spectator, the Toronto Star and the Oshawa Times.
Mr. HAKALA was just weeks shy of his 65th birthday.

Predeceased by 2 sons Freddie (1946) and Ronald (1972), and 4
brothers Peter, John, Hank and Joop. Cornelus was head baker
at London Psychiatric Hospital for 23 years. Friends will be
received at the Evans Funeral Home, 648 Hamilton Road (1 block
east of Egerton), on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 10-11
a.m. Funeral service will be conducted in the Evans Chapel on
Tuesday August 9, 2005, at 11: 00 a.m. with the Reverend Paul
BROWNING officiating. Interment in Woodland Cemetery. Donations
to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or Parkwood Hospital
would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences can be
