After a courageous battle with cancer, Ruth passed away peacefully,
surrounded by loved ones, at Oshawa General Hospital on Tuesday,
January 11, 2005. Born March 17, 1928 West Whitby Township, Ruth
was the youngest daughter of Ernest and Hazel
BROOKING.
The last
member of the Brooking family, she was predeceased by her parents
and her sisters Ethel, Florence, Eva (Mrs. John
BRIGHTMAN) and
May (Mrs. William H.
YOUNG). Ruth was the dearly loved aunt of

YOUNG (Carol), Wellington; Bob
YOUNG
(Laura), Brooklin; Heather
SHAY/SHEA, Wellington. She was the dear
great aunt of Jeff

Rob

Ruth's
entire career was devoted to the Oshawa Public Library. She was
head of cataloguing, head of adult services, assistant chief
librarian and Chief Executive Officer from 1974-1993. During
her term of office, the library underwent considerable expansion
with the construction of the Jess Hann Branch in 1977, the major
expansion of the R.S. McLaughlin Library, the new book mobile
in 1981, and the building of the North View Branch in 1987 and
the implementation of the
GEAC automation system in 1988. Ruth
was involved in many aspects of the Oshawa community, and gave
extensively of her time. She served as Vice President on the
Board of Directors of Parkwood Estate and on the Board of Brooklin
United Church. She was a member of the 'Now and Forever' campaign.
Ruth was a member of the Brooking Society, Devon, England, the
Rotary Club of Oshawa, the Air Cadet committee and the Canadian
Club of Oshawa and Durham of which she served as President from
1989-1990. For her many years of volunteer service to the City
of Oshawa Ruth was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in
2000. In addition to her career and her volunteer work, Ruth
was devoted to her family. She was young at heart and always
game for anything. She will be deeply missed. Ruth's family is
grateful to all the doctors and nurses who cared for her during
her illness. Ruth fought this insidious disease with fierce determination.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2002, Ruth continued to
live life to the fullest, and was determined to take her last
trip on the Queen Mary II only months ago with one of her Friends.
Resting at the Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King Street East,
Oshawa with Funeral Service in the Chapel on Saturday January
15th at 2 p.m. Interment Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin. In lieu
of flowers, memorial donations to the Oshawa Public Library,
Parkwood Foundation, or Brooklin United Church would be appreciated.
Visitation Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

18th at Armstrong Funeral Home in Oshawa from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 19th
at St. Gertrude's Church at 10 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
Many thanks and much gratitude go out to all of Philomena's caregivers
from Homecare, especially Elizabeth and Sharon, and to all of
her loving Taylor Avenue neighbours of 40 years. Please, in lieu

Nathaniel served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as Flight Sergeant
during World War 2 from 1941 to 1946. He was inducted into the
Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame for football with the Sarnia
Wanderers and Hockey with the Point Edward Redmen. He was also
an avid golfer and curler and was a member of the Sarnia Golf
and Curling Club, Greenwood Golf Club, a founding member and
Past President of the Point Edward Minor Athletic Association
and a Past President of the Point Edward Kiwanis. Visitation
at the McKenzie and Blundy Funeral Home and Cremation Centre,
431 Christina St. N, Sarnia, noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, January
18th, where a celebration of Nat's life will be held in the Chapel
at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Bill
