FONTAINE,
Marjorie "
Mona"
Jessie
(READ)
Entered into rest at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay on
Thursday,
July 7, 2005. Mona
READ was in her 86th year. Nicknamed
Mona, from a character in a 1970's deodorant commercial, she
was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. Her father was a Mountie
who was still actually mounted. After living through the Dirty
Thirties on the prairies, the family returned to England prior
to World War 2, where she became a Registered Nurse and later
served in the Army Nursing Corps in North Africa, India and Italy.
Not bad for a gal from Maple Creek. After the war, she continued
her nursing career at a veterans' hospital in Vancouver. There,
she met her husband-to-be, Gerry, a patient who had been injured
in the Korean War. They married, had one child and shared life
together for almost fifty years. She continued her nursing career
and eventually was registered in three provinces. Concentrating
on long term care, she served as Director of Nursing at nursing
homes in Calgary and Union Villa and Participation House (for
physically challenged young people) in the Toronto area. After
retirement, she and her husband settled in the Lindsay, Ontario
area where they busied themselves with curling, golf, lawn bowling
and travel. She was a curious person with a life long love of
reading and learning who wanted to understand everything about
everything. Returning from a vacation, she would faithfully read
two or three weeks of newspapers despite the fact that the news
was stale. As well, she was an adventurous person who liked new
experiences. These included waterskiing in her fifties, sailing
and cross country skiing in her sixties, golf and playing the
ukulele in her seventies and trying to run Extendicare-Kawartha
Lakes in her eighties. She had a strong sense of duty and responsibility,
of pulling one's own weight and not being a burden on other people.
In her last years, she worried that she was not doing her fair
share of the work and was letting her fellow nurses at Extendicare-Kawartha
Lakes down. She loved jokes (especially off colour ones) and
collected punch lines for which she could not remember the joke.
Cooking was not a strength. Rumour has it that she smoked out
the house once by heating a frozen pizza while it still was on
its cardboard tray! And she worried about everything, especially
about not having anything to worry about. But her best quality
was her love of people. She enjoyed talking to anyone about anything
since this was another opportunity to learn. She was an unconventional
woman who did things her way and was a liberated woman before
the term had been invented. Survived by her son Michael and his
wife Caroline
GRAHAM of Toronto and her sister Dorothy
WOOD of
Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Predeceased by her husband Gerry and her
brothers Buster of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Paddy of Wagga
Wagga, Australia. Visitation at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel
Street, Lindsay (705-328-2721) on Saturday August 6th from 12: 00
p.m. until time of memorial service in the chapel at 1: 30 p.m.
Interment of cremated remains at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
donations can be made to the Women's Resource Centre of Lindsay.
