In memory of Bill
CAMERON, my dear comrade
It is so absurd, the fate he met
By Joe FIORITO
My friend Bill
CAMERON died at the end of a strange week.
A girl was tossed from an overpass by her father, who then leapt
after her; he did not survive the bounce; she still clings to
life. A deranged man set himself on fire in front of the provincial
Legislature during a protest by farmers; under the wail of the
sirens, a farmer muttered that it was a shame the message of
the protest would be lost. And a homeless woman was dragged under
the wheels of a police car which, luckily for her, came to rest
in front of a downtown hospital in the early morning. Add a wandering
cat to this mess and you might have a scene from Bill's blistering
novel, Cat's Crossing.
The cat has now crossed.
I did not know Bill as well as some others but when I was new
to this town he welcomed me with a short sweet note. He had a
talent for Friendship. He called me, with a certain irony, comrade.
There was a time when we were leftish conspirators on a right-wing
rag. We were among those bumped off the payroll, a week after
9/11, in the midst of our furious labours. Bill, who was in a
rented car on his way to an assignment in the United States,
was dismissed over the phone.
Troubling for the man was the fact that he had kids in school
troubling for the journalist was that there were stories he did
not get to tell.
And so we licked our wounds together a time or two after that,
chasing the foul taste with fine drinks in a quiet bar. Bill
was not one who bore a grudge but neither was he able to forget
any rat who snatched bread from his table.
Oh, my dear comrade.
He was a big handsome man. He looked good on television. The
reason he looked good was because he always knew the story cold.
You saw it in his eyes. He was intelligent, but he was above
all human. He knew that the absurd was the obverse of the tragic.
And so it is absurd that one of the best broadcasters in the
country has died of cancer of the esophagus; as if some malignant
bits of those hard sad stories he told us for so long got stuck
in his throat. But it is tragic that he has left his lovely Cheryl,
and his handsome children, much too soon.
He and I were really just getting to know each other. Often,
when we went for drinks, he had a soda; he knew, as all men come
to know, that there are times when form is more important than
content.
We talked books, we griped about publishers, we gossiped about
the current state of the press; he made outrageous puns; mostly
we talked about how to tell stories. A measure of the man is
that he had been around the world on assignment, but he never
indulged in the boring telling and re-telling of old stories
from the last of his wars. I never heard him say, "When I was
in Africa..." His eyes were on the next story, not the last one.
I felt good in his company. I was just settling into his Friendship.
He flattered me with his questions, and he paid me the compliment
of honest answers to questions I asked him.
I always knew him as a superior broadcaster. When he anchored
the news, you were confident he was telling the truth. He made
it look easy. It is not. He asked the good hard straight questions
in such a way that we all thought, why, those were the very questions
we would ask if we were in his chair.
To hear him on the radio was to hear his mind at work. You felt
thoughtful as you listened. This is what I think: The Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation was stupid to have let him leave, just
as it was foolish not to court him back.
Bill was not just a good reporter. He wrote from the inside out.
He brought you with him to where he was and let you see what
he saw. I recall a piece he wrote about driving east with his
son, taking the young man to university. It was one of those
occasions when father and son are alone as equals, save for who
got to put what music in the car stereo. He made it fresh, and
that is the highest compliment I can pay.
Bill bore his illness with intelligence, with humour and dignity
and, at least in public, with a quiet courage. If there was rage
and if there were fears, and there must have been, he hid these
from his Friends. He knew he was going to get better. He was
Bill CAMERON, and so we believed him.
I miss him now. I mourn his loss. He has gone ahead of us, as
usual. He is up there now, on assignment.
Later, comrade.
