M.B.A. (Honours); M.A. Political Science; M.A. International Relations; Certificate of the Russian Institute; Diploma of Indology Ph.D. South Asian Studies; Ph.D. International Relations and Law; Professor Emeritus Political Science Department, Brock University.
Victor was born in Damborice, Czech Republic, on January 5th, 1922. He passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at the St. Catharines General Hospital at 83 years of age. Beloved husband of Alexandra, for 44 years. Loving father of Jana (Tim) ZACHAREWSKI and Victor FIC. Cherished grandpa of Lara and Nicholas. Victor will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, family, Friends and colleagues.
Before joining Brock University in 1971, he taught for 2 years at the University of Yangun Myanmar, 8 years at Nanyang University, Singapore and the University of Singapore. During his academic career he published 19 books, the last one in December 2004, numerous articles and book reviews. He published in academic journals, read papers at conferences and wrote commissioned reports. In 1999 Victor was decorated by President Havel of the Czech Republic for his academic work and his work in human rights. Victor was also a member of numerous professional organizations, including President of Canadian Association of Asian Studies 1974- 1976, a member of the board of the Indo-Canadian Shastri Institute 1972-1988 and the Edward Benes Institute, Prague 1998. Victor will be sorely missed and forever remembered by those who love him.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Victor's life will be held in St. Julia Church, 251 Glenridge Ave. St. Catharines on Monday February 7th, 2005 at 11: 00 a.m. Family will receive Friends from 10: 30 a.m. For further information please contact the George Darte Funeral Chapel, 585 Carlton St. St. Catharines at 905-937-4444. Best grandfather of Michelle and Rob DUCKWORTH, Stephanie and Ian MADELEY, Anne BEDDOWS, Samantha HALL, Rick FICA, Joey GOULD. Proud great-grandfather of Bryan DUCKWORTH and Lauren MADELEY. Uncle to Norman HALL, Dorothy and Lawrence BENEDICT, Grace and Bren MARSH, Bill SCHOALES, Wilma SCHOALES. A proud World War 2 Veteran of the Italian campaign (Seaforth Highlanders,) (War) buddy and friend to Ted JENKENS, Bill HUSSY, Ken ARMSTRONG. Sadly missed by 8 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren. Harry was born in Windsor area on May 30, 1919, the son of the late Joseph C. and Katherine SHIPP) LOUCKS. He was a retired employee of the Saint Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. He served during World War 2 and was a member of Branch 41 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Peacefully surrounded by her family at London Health Sciences Centre - University Campus on Sunday, November 13th, 2005, Doris "Dorie" (née AWCOCK) of London in her 84th year. Lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years John; her daughter Linda COLLINS (Richard 1996), of Waterloo and her children Emily, Jennifer and Connor and her son John (Darlene) of Appin and their sons Russell and Richard. Deeply missed by her sister Frances (Toots) CAMERON, sisters-in-law Mary READY (Philip 2002) and Nancy READY (Charles 2004), and many nieces and nephews. Youngest in her family, Dorie was predeceased by her parents Henry AWCOCK and Frances WISTOW and seven siblings: Harold (Belle,) Viola FICKLING (Wilf,) Russell (Dutch), Greta FICKLING (Len), Stanley (Nip) (Mitty), Robert (Kay), and Herbert (Olive). Dorie loved her family and worked hard as they moved frequently with John's military career. She had many different jobs and past times. She and John enjoyed many trips together. Dorie loved baking, especially her renowned pies, butter tarts and date squares. She enjoyed gardening, reading and playing cards with Friends. The family wishes to thank the nursing, medical and palliative care staff of the 4th and 6th floors of University Hospital for their excellent care during the past six weeks. A memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel, 1997 Dundas St. E. (between Airport and Clarke Rd). on Saturday, November 19th at 2 p.m. Inurnment will take place followed by a reception. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Dorie are asked to consider the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. At Kensington Village, London on Monday, December 6th, 2005, Mary "Molly" (IRWIN) FICKLING of London in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late Arthur "Art" FICKLING. Dear mother of Dave FICKLING and his wife Patricia and Fred FICKLING and his wife Sheila all of London. Dear sister of Muriel PODMORE of London. Predeceased by her sister Edith TUTHILL. Loving grandmother of Brad FICKLING and his wife Kimberly; Deborah BOEHLER and her husband Brad Scott FICKLING and Allison FICKLING all of London; and Doug FICKLING and his wife Sandra of Waterloo, also loved by her great-grandchildren Melissa, Tom, Bill BRADEN, Sheldon, Nicholas and Samantha. Aunt Molly will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. "Molly" was a Charter and Life Member and Past Matron of Star of the Nile Chapter No. 308 Order of the Eastern Star Nilestown. Special thanks to the staff and volunteers at Kensington Village, Dr. William PAYNE and Chaplain Maureen DWYER for their care and kindness.
