Freak crash kills garage owner
By April KEMICK,
Free
Press
Reporter
A London mechanic, who recently realized his dream of opening
an automotive shop, was killed in a freak accident last night
in his shop.
Kifah DARWISH, 31, died when a car being moved inside the garage
went out of control and crushed him through a wall, police said.
The accident happened shortly after 6: 30 p.m. at Darwish's Speedy
Fix Automotive at 1115 Brydges St.
DARWISH, who drove a taxi by night and worked in the new auto
shop during the day, was killed instantly when the car, driven
by a customer, lurched forward and slammed through the wall,
police said.
"This is being treated as an accident," said Sgt. Bill
CHANTLER.
witnesses: to the grisly collision, and the man who was driving
the vehicle before it struck
DARWISH, were visibly shattered
as police arrived.
The man whom onlookers described as the driver fell to his knees
in the dusty yard as another man who saw the collision consoled
him.
As word of
DARWISH's death spread, Friends, family and fellow
taxi drivers flocked to the tiny shop to offer their condolences.
They described a hard-working man who, after six years in Canada,
finally got immigration status earlier this year.
DARWISH, who lived in Saudi Arabia and India before moving to
Canada, recently flew to Jordan to get married, Friends said.
He was trying to get his Jordanian wife's papers in order so
she could join him in London this fall, said his roommate, Amin
ISMAIL.
"Things were just starting to pick up for him," said
ISMAIL,
his eyes brimming with tears.
"He just got his papers, he just got married, he just bought
his first cab, he just opened the shop."
ISMAIL, who had spoken to
DARWISH hours before his death, described
his friend as a "straight-up, incredibly hard-working" guy who
was well-liked.
"He's working two jobs, trying to save up as much money as he
can, so he can bring his wife here,"
ISMAIL said.
"She's still in Jordan. She's still waiting for him," he said.
Firas ELDANY, a friend of
DARWISH's, said he was an outgoing
man who loved chatting with customers and didn't even want to
take payment when he fixed their cars.
"I just came by today for a tuneup and he said, 'No, no, don't
worry (about payment,')
ELDANY said.
"This is just not right."
As one of DARWISH's cousins began phoning family overseas to
tell them of the tragedy, police took lengthy statements from
emotional employees and Friends who witnessed the accident.
Labour Ministry officials, who investigate workplace deaths,
were called to the scene, but ruled it wasn't a labour incident,
police said.
Police were still investigating last night.
