Lucy▼
In her 92nd year peacefully in her sleep at Trillium Health Centre,
Mississauga, Ontario on Saturday, February 19, 2005. Lucy, a
recipient of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award, a
teacher and a consultant with the Etobicoke Board of Education
spent the majority of her life teaching English to both children
and adults. Born in Bolton, England Lucy came to Canada in 1949
with her husband, Stanislaw (Stach), a polish airman who predeceased
her. In the 1960s Lucy saw a need for an "English as a second
language" program. Using her personality, charm and quick intelligence
she persuaded the decision makers at the Etobicoke Board of Education
to pilot a program at the elementary school level, which became
known as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages; a term
she felt showed respect to all people. The program continues
to this day. After retirement, Lucy established a scholarship
fund for those deserving students who wished to pursue post-
secondary education. She was, in short, a pioneer in English
as a second language education in Canada. At Lucy's request there
will be no funeral home visitation or service. A celebration
of her life will take place in the spring. Lucy will be remembered
by all those who knew her as a devoted teacher and a generous
friend. She was a tiny lady with an abundance of spunk and spirit.
We will all miss the twinkle in her eye, her wit and her ever
present sense of humour which was there even as the fog settled
in. Those wishing to remember Lucy are asked to please make donations
to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Alzheimer Society of Canada
or the Trillium Health Centre Foundation.
"Thus Nature spake - The work was done-
How soon my Lucy's race was run!
She died, and left to me
This heath, this calm and quiet scene
The memory of what has been,
And never more will be."
(William Wordsworth, 1770-1850)
