PAUL,
Clive
Delbridge (29th November 1932-27th February 2005)
'A true gentleman' 'A great guy' 'He had such dignity' 'We'll
miss his sense of humour' 'He found ways to have fun in any situation'
'A man of ideals who lived by those ideals' Those thoughts are
just a small sample of what people had to say about our father
when they heard he had died. A single one of those would be an
epitaph to which we could aspire. But Clive was all of that...and
so much more besides. Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan was his birthplace
and home until he left to attend Stanford University. Although
he didn't actually live there again, Clive remained a loyal Moose
Jaw lad. He attended reunions in Victoria for as long as his
health permitted, and often regaled his family with tales of
his time growing up. Clive was a versatile athlete, playing at
senior competitive levels in hockey, baseball, basketball and
football. As his family grew, he became an avid swimmer and encouraged
all three of his children in their competitive swimming. After
attending Stanford University and the University of British Columbia
(where he also played football), Clive worked for several major
corporations including General Motors, Avis Renta-Car, and Eli
Lilly. When he and his wife, Doreen, decided that life was too
short to spend it shoveling snow in Alberta, they moved to Kelowna,
British Columbia and then to Nelson, British Columbia. While
in Nelson, Clive ran a successful co-operative insurance business
and later became purchasing manager at Kootenay Lake District
Hospital. Clive and Doreen finally completed their westward migration
and settled in Victoria where they opened The Glass Store. Clive
had strong political and social ideals and he wasn't shy about
expressing them. He felt very strongly that the true measure
of a society is the degree to which it takes responsibility for,
and cares for, the weakest members of that society. An unusual
combination of businessman and unrepentant 'lefty', he also took
the rare step of 'putting his money where his mouth was' by taking
up public service. He sat on the governing board of the St. Francis
Hospital in Nelson, served as President of the New Democratic
Party riding association for Nelson-Creston, and was elected
as Regional Director for the Regional District of Central Kootenay.
As his kids, we are so thankful for his life. We're thankful
for all the 'dad things' he did for us that we didn't really
appreciate at the time - like giving up his summers so we could
attend swim meets, and staying late at work so he could collect
us from band and basketball practice. We're thankful that he
passed along his love and enthusiasm for jazz. We're thankful
for the various senses he helped us develop - like our warped
sense of humour, a keen sense of social justice, and a sense
of family. Doreen passed away in 1989, but at the end Clive was
surrounded by family and Friends who helped him to rest after
he worked so hard to stay with us. Family members who will be
hoisting a drink in his memory include his wife, Lucille
DOXSEE,
son Gordon (daughter-in-law Nicole
O'SULLIVAN and granddaughters
Maggie and Alex,) daughter Shannon
EDWARDS (grand_sons Paul and
Corbin,) and son Kevin (daughter-in-law Karin
PAUL.) We will
be celebrating Clive's life on the afternoon of 31st March 2005.
It was his wish that any who want to make a gesture of remembrance
do so by making a donation to Oxfam or to the World Wildlife
Fund. If you would like to send us your memories of Clive, we
would enjoy hearing from you at: rememberingclive@shaw.ca
