DAFOE,
Allan
Roy, 1943 -- Died This Day
Wednesday, June 1, 2005, Page S7
Doctor born in Madoc, Ontario, on May 29, 1883
The son of a physician, he attended the University of Toronto
medical school and, in 1909, went into practice in Callander,
Ontario, a rural community he would thereafter seldom leave.
Described as a shy recluse, he is best known for delivering and
caring for the
DIONNE
Quintuplets. On
May 28, 1934, he was summoned
to the home of the
DIONNEs, where he found a multiple birth in
progress. Using his practical country-doctor skills and the telephone
advice of his brother William, a Toronto gynecologist, he kept
the babies alive, and they became the first quintuplets to survive.
He continued to help care for the children for years and became
something of a celebrity (he was portrayed in at least two Hollywood
movies.) The provincial government gave Dr.
DAFOE joint guardianship
of the quintuplets, and a special nursery was built so the public
could pay to view them. This found general approval at the time
but later drew criticism as a sideshow. In 1936, he wrote Dr.
Dafoe's Guidebook for Mothers, followed in 1941 by How to Raise
Your Baby. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire.
