ANDERSON,
William
Lindsay "
Bill"
Born April 24, 1924 in Edmonton, Alberta, passed away unexpectedly
on June 24, 2005. A youthful 81 year old, Bill will be greatly
missed by his wife
Ilse, sisters Mary-Joan (Al
COVEY) and Lindsay
(Bob GRINDLEY,) three children Lyn, Rob, and Lara, step-children
David and Janet, sons-in-law Mike, Rob and Dan, and daughters-in-law
Cher, Trena and Meg. He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, Erin,
Laurel, Tillie, Alex, Jordan, Alana, Eliza, and Pia. Bill grew
up in Edmonton, attending High School and then the University
of Alberta, receiving a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering
and later an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. He worked
for Imperial Oil in Sarnia, Ontario before returning to Edmonton
to run his father's lumber business, Anderson Lumber Company
(reformed Canadian Conifer Ltd.) at the age of 28. In 1965 Bill
joined the multinational Reichhold Chemical Inc and moved his
family to West Vancouver where they lived for the next 20 years.
In the early 1980s, Bill left Reichhold to return to the resource
sector with Alberta Energy Corporation where he was Director
of Corporate Development (Acquisitions and Mergers). Bill then
pursued the field of business consolidations and consulting work
with a number of important companies, including Cornat Industries,
Bennett Pollution Control (now Bennett Environmental) and Versatile
Corporation. By the late 1980s and wanting greater professional
independence, Bill formed his own corporate business brokerage
which was active in the challenging area of mergers and acquisitions.
This eventually led to the creation of
AMAC
Consultants
Inc,
where he and partner John
McARTHUR became the industry leaders
in insurance company acquisitions and consolidations. By the
time of his retirement in 2002, Bill
ANDERSON was acknowledged
universally as the expert in his field. Beyond this impressive
professional record, Bill
ANDERSON was devoted to his community
through public service. While in Edmonton, he was an active member
of the Rotary Club, Chairman of the Edmonton Parks and Recreation
Board, City Alderman, and a director of the Edmonton Eskimos
Football Club. While in Vancouver, Bill continued his community
ser vice with the Rotary Club and served as a director of Metro
Transit during the construction of the Skytrain system. Bill
was an important figure in the early history of the Whistler
Mountain resort. He built a vacation home there in 1966, at a
time when the community was small, intimate and diverse; Bill
was one of a handful of community leaders at Whistler who helped
create the needed institutions in the area, especially the Whistler
Skiers' Chapel where he served as Chairman. Bill loved life and
lived his life to the fullest. He was a keen sportsman, an enthusiast
supporter of the Canadian Football League, especially his beloved
Eskimos and an avid skier. Bill skied every run in Western Canada
and the United States, and his final time on skis occurred in
the company of his grandchildren just before his 80th birthday.
Bill also loved to travel. He and Ilse made trips to Europe,
too many to count, and were yearly winter migrants to Mexico.
Bill was devoted to family and will be missed by the growing
legacy he leaves behind. Service to be held at Saint John's Anglican
Church, 1490 Nanton Street (27th and Granville), 8 July 2 p.m.
Reception follows at Shaughnessy Restaurant (Van Deusen Gardens),
5251 Oak Street, Vancouver, 3-5 p.m.
